Match Report
Thursday 19th March 2009 Molten Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division
Haringey Borough (0) 0
Leverstock Green (0) 2 Parkinson 45, Wardle 76
at Coles Park

Leverstock Green continued with their busy schedule of matches and registered their first win in five games with an excellent display at Haringey Borough. The two-goal winning margin doesn't do justice to Green's utter domination of a very one-sided game, but it is enough to move them back up to fifth place on goal difference.

Haringey were newly managerless, having sacked Allan Fenn the previous day, and the game was a baptism of fire for 16-year old keeper George Anderson, signed from Biggleswade Town last week and given his debut tonight. The youngster certainly had no shortage of opportunities to show his talents. In the 6th minute Anderson couldn't hold onto a free kick from Matt Wardle as it bobbled off the pitch. James Armstrong nipped in for the loose ball and laid it back to Steve Hawes, but his first shot and a follow-up effort were both blocked on the line.

On 14 minutes Wardle set up Armstrong with a shooting chance but he pulled it wide. Five minutes later Frankie Jowle's corner was flicked on by Lee Waryszniuk to Charlie Gorman, but his clipped shot went just over the bar. Anderson's best moment of the night was on 29 minutes, when David Parkinson struck a fierce cross-cum-shot from near the touchline which was heading for the top corner until Anderson stuck out an arm to scoop it away.

There were more chances for Leverstock. On 33 minutes Gorman's pass put Armstrong through, but Anderson came out quickly and Armstrong hit his shot across goal and wide. A minute later Armstrong put Wardle in, but his shot was blocked by a defender. In the 44th minute Hawes shot over from Armstrong's cross, and it was beginning to look like another one of those nights for Green. However, seconds before half-time, Parkinson received the ball 30 yards out. His shot took a big deflection, which gave Anderson no chance as it flew into the net to send Green into the break deservedly ahead.

The second half was more of the same, with Leverstock launching wave after wave of attacks. The nearest misses came on 62 minutes when Wardle headed wide from Gorman's cross, and on 69 minutes when Armstrong was clean through and sent a lob over Anderson, but it hit the post. On 73 minutes Armstrong beat the offside trap to go clean through again, but Anderson came out to save his shot. Finally on 76 minutes Armstrong squared the ball to Wardle, who turned on the edge of the penalty area and sent a low shot past Anderson into the corner of the net to give Green the cushion of a second goal.

There was a first team debut for Bekim Culaj, a player from Kosovo who has impressed for the reserves in recent weeks, replacing Jowle midway through the half. On 78 minutes Culaj was just wide with a shot from Parkinson's cross. At the other end, Graeme Milner and his youthful back four had a very quiet night, as Haringey could not muster a serious effort on goal all night. Things are likely to get harder for Green with four more away games to come before the end of March.
