A thrilling finish at Pancake Lane saw Biggleswade Town equalise a minute from time to deny Leverstock Green a notable win against one of the title contenders. Green certainly deserved at least a point, but their weakness at defending set-pieces showed as they conceded three headers, The visitors did well to battle on and get a point given that they played for an hour with ten men.
Biggleswade had the best of the early play, and missed some good chances to take the lead. In the 6th minute a corner was headed down to Neil Morgan, but his shot from close range was blocked by Ebi Theophilus. On 16 minutes Kevin Cooper threaded the ball through to Ryan Redford, whose shot beat Graeme Milner but drifted just wide. Cooper was clean through himself three minutes later, but volleyed just wide. Finally, on 20 minutes Daniel Flack floated in a free kick from near the touchline to the far post, where Paul Reynolds rose unmarked to head Biggleswade into the lead.
It should have been 2-0 two minutes later when Chris Hewitt got to the bye-line and pulled back for Bobby Dance, but with the goal at his mercy he didn't catch his shot right and Milner gathered comfortably. Leverstock had a chance on 26 minutes when James Armstrong turned and crossed for David Parkinson, but he too didn't make proper contact and the shot went wide.
The incident that changed the game happened in the 29th minute. Eddie Gerrard put in a strong tackle on Cooper by the touchline, but Cooper retaliated by swinging his arm and catching Gerrard in the face. The referee had a good view and showed the ex-Hertford Town man a straight red card, while Gerrard received a yellow for his tackle. Three minutes later the scores were level. A long kick from Milner got an inadvertent flick on from a Town defender into the path of Armstrong, and he produced an assured finish, running on to slot the ball past keeper Dean Bull for the equaliser.
Nine minutes into the second half Green took the lead with a rather soft goal. Another kick from Milner was knocked out to Charlie Gorman, who had a clear shooting chance on the left corner of the penalty area, but on his wrong foot. Gorman cut inside onto his other foot and hit a shot along the ground which should have been a simple take for the keeper, but Bull somehow allowed it to squirm between his hand and the post and trickle over the line to gift Green a 2-1 lead.
Five minutes later Bull was replaced by substitute keeper Warren Foskett, who kept his side in the game on 79 minutes by coming out to block a shot from Theophilus. Two minutes later Green put themselves under pressure with a poor free kick from the halfway line which didn't even reach the penalty area. The result a few seconds later was a disputed corner to Biggleswade, and it was an action replay as Reynolds rose unchallenged at the far post to head home for 2-2.
However, Leverstock weren't finished yet. On 84 minutes, as Theophilus knocked a ball over the Biggleswade defence, Armstrong was offside, but stood still to indicate he was not active. Parkinson ran from an onside position, and raced clear to fire past Foskett and put Green back in the lead at 3-2. As has happened many times this season though, they were not quite able to close out the win.
There was little over a minute left on the clock when Biggleswade caused more problems from a set piece. The ball was hooked to the far post, where substitute Dan Heron was on hand to head home and rescue a point for his side. The Waders are still very much in a three-way battle for the title with Harefield and Chalfont, curiously Leverstock have now drawn 3-3 at home with all three of them.
