Leverstock Green set up a mouthwatering St Mary's Cup final against Tring Athletic as they cruised to a 6-1 win over Oxhey Jets in the semi-final at Pancake Lane. The sending off of the Jets keeper just before half time was undoubtedly the game-changing moment, but Green took full advantage of the extra man and scored some fine goals, including a second hat-trick of the season for team captain Daniel Griggs.

It was an unfortunate first team debut for James Deamer, the young goalkeeper from Oxhey's championship-winning reserve side. In the 11th minute David Parkinson sent over a cross from the right which brushed off James Armstrong, and Deamer somehow let it through his hands to give Green the opening goal.

Deamer did better two minutes later as he spectacularly tipped over a goalbound shot from Griggs. On 14 minutes Green had the ball in the net again from Parkinson's shot, but it took a big deflection off Matt Wardle, who was offside, and the goal was chalked off. Jamie Arthur might have levelled for Jets on 28 minutes as he came in to meet a cross unmarked, but shot over the bar. Otherwise, the Green defence did an excellent job of keeping Oxhey at bay.

Four minutes before the break, a clearance from Gary Connolly took a flick off a Jets defender to put Armstrong clean through. As Armstrong tried to go round Deamer, the keeper tried to claim the ball, but instead took Armstrong out. The referee pointed straight to the spot, and had no alternative but to show Deamer a straight red card. Jets captain Marc Ayres took over in goal, and his first action was to pick the ball out of the net as Griggs netted the 42nd minute penalty to put Green 2-0 up at the break.

The second half gave Leverstock a chance to show their attacking prowess. Three minutes into the half Parkinson played a ball over the defence to put Armstrong through again, but he shot wide. On 56 minutes Griggs started a move from the halfway line with a ball out to Armstrong, who played a one-two with Kenny Hull before crossing. Wardle had his back to goal and couldn't get a shot in, but he laid the ball back to Griggs, who finished what he had started by shooting home the third goal.

The fourth arrived two minutes later, and it was unfortunate for stand-in keeper Ayres, who slipped over as he tried to clear and sliced the ball straight to Wardle 40 yards out. There was still work to do, but Wardle showed the composure to look up and chip the ball towards the empty net, and it dropped just inside the post for a 4-0 lead.

Mick Vipond took the opportunity to use two of his subs on the hour, taking off Armstrong and Hull and bringing on Frankie Jowle and Eddie Gerrard. For a brief time it looked as though the move might backfire. On 63 minutes Arthur pulled a goal back for Jets as he netted the rebound after a header had hit the bar. Five minutes later Green still hadn't recovered their composure when Paul Turner hit the post in a goalmouth scramble.

However, any lingering doubts were banished by two more quickfire goals. On 70 minutes Charlie Gorman and Parkinson set up Griggs to stroke the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area to complete his hat-trick and restore the four-goal lead. Two minutes later Parkinson showed more tricky footwork before laying back to Mark Welling, who produced a sumptuous finish, virtually passing the ball into the bottom corner of the net from over 20 yards for his first goal in two years and a 6-1 lead.

That's the way it stayed, although Jowle almost added another five minutes from time when his cross drifted inches wide of the post. Green will now face Tring in the final of which the date and venue are yet to be decided.
