Leverstock Green's marvellous run of form continued as two second half goals saw them come away from local rivals Tring Athletic with victory. This win, over a team who started the day in second place, is Leverstock's fourth straight win - all of them away, and their unbeaten league run now stretches to 11 games.
Lewis Pritchard, scorer of two goals in midweek, was on the bench today as Steve Heath started with Dale Sears up front with Matt Wardle. There was an early chance for Green on 11 minutes, as Sears nodded Bill Morgan's ball forward into the path of Wardle, but Tring keeper Mike Underwood turned Wardle's shot round the post with his leg.
It was Tring that had the better of the first half, though. A minute later Simon Ellis put the ball right across the face of the Green goal but nobody got on the end of it. On 22 minutes Vinnie Iannone headed Danny Gray's free kick wide from close range. Three minutes later the Green defence was shouting for offside in vain as Darren Franklin put Iannone clean through, but Green keeper Carl Tasker was quickly off his line to dive at Iannone's feet and claim the ball. There was chaos in the Tring box on 37 minutes as Underwood misjudged a Lee Bircham corner, but Sears was one of at least three Leverstock players who had efforts blocked in the ensuing scramble. Tasker had to produce another save on 39 minutes, turning the ball round the post as Tony Fields turned and shot from close range.
A change at half time saw Bekim Culaj withdrawn, and Sears moved back to play in a reshuffled defence as Pritchard came on up front. The change worked wonders as Green turned in a superb second half display. In the second minute after the restart Pritchard set up Wardle with a good shooting chance, but Underwood spread himslf to save well. Tring threatened on a sweeping counter attack on 51 minutes, as Iannone and Franklin combined to set up Gray with a clear shot, but Tasker pulled off another great save to grab the ball on the line.
Green were looking much the better side in the second half, though. On 53 minutes Pritchard got on the end of a Bircham cross, but Underwood tipped the header over the bar. Two minutes later Daniel Griggs shot just over the bar from distance. A minute later Gary Connolly played a great ball down the line to Pritchard, who took on and beat Henry Thomas, but his ball across goal just eluded Wardle as he slid in at the far post.
The deserved goal came on 62 minutes, and it was well-worked as Wardle played the perfect pass for Pritchard to beat the offside trap, and Pritchard ran on to take the ball round Underwood and coolly slot into the empty net for his 13th goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
Mark Welling replaced Richard Harvey on 65 minutes, and five minutes later a cross from Welling dropped for Griggs, but Underwood pulled off another good save. Tring made three substitutions as the game moved into the last 15 minutes, and it almost paid off. On 79 minutes Louis West slipped and miskicked as he tried to clear, leaving sub Dave Whicker a run at goal. Whicker got to the bye-line and crossed, but it went right across the face of goal with another sub Ashley Addison just failing to get on the end of it.
West had to go off injured after his slip, and with his replacement being young forward Ryan Fahy, Leverstock had to reshuffle the defence again for the closing minutes. However, they continued to hold out, and in the second minute of stoppage time the game was put beyond doubt by a superb second goal. Connolly won the ball in his own half and went on a driving run into the Tring half, where he laid off to Pritchard out wide. Pritchard cut inside and laid the ball across goal, and there to meet it was Connolly, who had continued his run and he found the net to cap another man-of-the-match display and put the icing on a well-deserved result for the Leverstock side.
