Leverstock Green's golden run of form continued as they enjoyed a comfortable 4-0 home win over Hertford Town in their latest Premier Division match. The margin of victory did not flatter Green at all, and only a superb display by Hertford keeper Lee Robinson kept the score respectable. This was a fifth straight win for Steve Heath's side and a 12th game unbeaten as Green cemented their fifth place in the table and moved to within six points of top spot.
The visitors looked sluggish and lacklustre from the off, and Green should have taken the lead in the 3rd minute. Bekim Culaj played a ball from the back which allowed Matt Wardle to easily beat the offside flag and go clean through, but with only Robinson to beat, Wardle put his shot wide of the post. It only took another three minutes for Leverstock to exploit another huge gap in the Hertford defence. This time it was Lee Bircham playing the ball from his own half by the right touchline to put Dale Sears clean through down the middle, and Sears made no mistake, slotting a low shot under Robinson for his ninth goal of the season and an early Green lead.
Hertford were immediately forced into an early change, with defender Tom Neill having to come off having clearly not recovered from an injury picked up in the pre-match warm-up. It made little difference to the flow of the match though, with Green having all the possession and all the chances. There should have been a second goal on 14 minutes in a goalmouth scramble, but Richard Harvey had two efforts blocked and Sears had another shot blocked as Robinson eventually claimed the ball. Two minutes later Gary Connolly's cross was nodded down by Sears to Harvey, but Robinson saved his shot from point blank range. Bircham's ball into the box on 20 minutes caused more chaos, but neither Sears, Harvey nor Simon Conway could put the ball away in the ensuing scramble. Sears had another close-range effort kept out on 37 minutes from Culaj's cross.
Finally on 42 minutes Green found the net again, and it was a goal worth waiting for. Connolly interchanged passes with Mark Welling before Welling crossed into the box for Harvey, who laid the ball back for Connolly, and the youngster connected with the sweetest of strikes from 25 yards. Robinson had no chance as the ball flew into the top corner, Connolly had his third goal in successive games, and Green had a 2-0 half time lead.
The second half continued in a similar vein. On 51 minutes Connolly's ball put Wardle through again, but again Wardle failed to finish as his attempted chip over Robinson cleared the bar. Five minutes later Wardle set up Connolly, but his shot was turned round the post by Robinson. A third goal had to come, although there was some controversy about the 61st minute score. Conway ran in from the left down to the bye-line and pulled the ball back for Sears, whose effort was blocked across goal back to Conway, who netted from close to the post. The linesman flagged for offside against Conway, but the referee allowed the goal to stand as Conway was off the pitch when Sears hit his shot.
Hertford's morale fell further after that, and it was only another two minutes before Green added the fourth. A corner was headed clear, but only as far as Welling, who chipped the ball back into the box where Lee Johnson met it with an accurate header into the corner of the net.
After that it was just a question of whether Wardle could get his name on the scoresheet. The answer was no, as Robinson kept out his shot on 67 minutes and his header on 71 minutes. Carl Tasker didn't have a save to make until the 81st minute, denying Lee Roberts after Kevin Cooper's pass had put him through. Leverstock can expect a much tougher challenge on Tuesday night when second-placed Aylesbury are the visitors to Pancake Lane.
After the match the Green side were belatedly presented with the Premier Division Team of the Month award for November by league president Brian Smith and Andy Passman from Molten Sports. On current evidence Green can expect a few more of these awards before the end of the season.
