Leverstock Green got back to winning ways after three straight defeats, and it was a well-deserved win after a brilliant performance from Steve Heath's side. However, after missing countless chances during a match they should have won at a canter, Green only escaped with the win after Haringey were controversially denied an equaliser with the last kick of the game by the linesman failing to spot that the ball had crossed the line.
Before the game, manager Heath and captain Lee Bircham were presented with the Team of the Month award for January - a reminder of how well the team played before things went awry over the last three games. This game didn't start well either. In the 7th minute Bill Morgan was penalised for an alleged foul inside the box, although there seemed little contact as the Haringey forward went down. Adam Scotcher sent Carl Tasker the wrong way from the penalty spot to put his side into an early lead.
Leverstock soon started to put their game together though, and dominated the rest of the half. Their first effort on target came in the 20th minute - a turn and shot from Matt Wardle which was saved by visiting keeper Brian Sealey. Five minutes later Green won a corner, and Bircham's cross to the edge of the box was knocked towards goal, and Wardle applied the finishing touch from close range to net a deserved equaliser.
Two minutes later Richard Harvey got to the bye-line and pulled the ball back for Adam Reid, who hit a thumping shot that was cleared off the line. From the rebound Wardle set up Reid again, and this time his shot was saved by Sealey. On 35 minutes Sealey saved again when Reid's pass put Bekim Culaj through, gathering the ball safely despite initially spilling it.
Five minutes into the second half Tasker had to be alert to save a snap shot from Craig Scotcher, but again it was Green very much in the ascendency throughout the half. The passing and movement and build-up play was excellent, the only thing lacking was putting the ball in the net. They were unlucky on 59 minutes when Mark Welling's free kick was flicked on by Simon Conway to Dale Sears, whose header brought a superb tip-over from Sealey. Two minutes later Green believed they had scored as Harvey appeared to force the ball over the line in a goalmouth scramble, but the goal was not given.
On 68 minutes Morgan hit the post with a free kick from distance. Sealey was outstanding again on 71 minutes as he got his fingertips to a superb shot from Culaj and tipped it onto the bar, but Harvey followed up, and before Sealey could recover, Harvey had headed the ball over him into the empty net to finally put Green in front.
Wardle was just over the bar from a free kick on 76 minutes, and Culaj went close two minutes later as he intercepted the ball before a solo run and shot just over the bar.
Going into stoppage time, Green still only held a slender 2-1 lead, although in the second minute of stoppages Wardle missed the chance to put the game away as he somehow shot over the bar with the empty net at his mercy from two yards out. Seconds later the ball was at the other end, and Scotcher hit a shot which Tasker got down to palm away, although it was clear that the ball had crossed the line first. There was no signal from the officials, though, and play continued, and as the ball was cleared the referee blew the final whistle. The Haringey players and management were justifiably incensed, but there was to be no changing the decision. To their credit, Haringey accepted the situation with good grace and admitted that Leverstock deserved the win for their performance.
