Leverstock Green continued their impressive form in cup ties as they beat Chipperfield Corinthians 4-0 in tonight's St Mary's Cup first round tie at Pancake Lane. The margin of victory was not unexpected against a team from the Herts Senior County League, but Chipperfield gave a good account of themselves and kept Green at bay for a long time, with a couple of late goals padding the scoreline in the end.
Green manager Steve Heath used this match to bring in a couple of new players to his squad. New signing Luke Butler made his debut in midfield alongside his brother Ben, while reserve team left back Kriss Tyrell made his first team debut. The first half was all Leverstock, but they couldn't put the ball in the net. In the 4th minute Ben Butler's free kick was met with a header from Adam Hallissey that hit the bar. When the ball was crossed in again, Bill Morgan's shot was deflected wide. Louis Austin headed just wide from a Morgan corner on 17th minute, while another corner in the 36th minute caused a goalmouth scramble in which any of four players could have scored, but the ball somehow stayed out. In the last minute of the half, a nicely put together move ended with Hallissey putting the ball across goal, where Austin slid in but just failed to make contact.
There was another near-miss early in the second half when Morgan's cross found Austin with a header, but Chipperfield keeper Luke McDonaugh made a great save to keep it out. Chipperfield had their moments early in the second half as well, hitting the Green bar at one point.
Steve Heath used all three of his subs before the hour mark, no doubt with one eye on preserving his players for Saturday's visit to Hullbridge in the FA Vase Second Round. Two of the substitutes combined on 64 minutes as Lewis Pritchard threaded a pass through to Chad Pinching, who made a run into the box before being brought down by defender Mark Parfitt. The referee awarded the penalty, and also rather harshly showed Parfitt a straight red card, deeming him to be the last man. Ben Butler netted the spot kick to give Leverstock a long-overdue lead.
The second goal arrived six minutes later, and it was a special moment for 19-year old Tyrell, who marked his first team debut with a superb strike from 30 yards that flew over the outstretched arms of McDonaugh into the net to put Green firmly in the driving seat.
Green continued to press forward, but didn't add to their tally until the 88th minute with a goal from a quick breakaway. Jon Davies fed the ball out to Bekim Culaj, who crossed low into the box where Hallissey came in to score from six yards out. In the final minute Davies took the ball from a tired defender before running on to shoot home from the edge of the box to complete the 4-0 win.
It was a performance and scoreline to boost the morale of the Green side before the trip to Hullbridge, but the in-form Essex Senior League side will be a much tougher proposition.
