Leverstock Green cruised into the last 64 of the FA Carlsberg Vase as they travelled to Essex Senior League side Hullbridge Sports and returned with a 5-1 win from their Second Round tie. It continued Leverstock's remarkable cup form which has seen them win 10 of their 11 cup ties played this season, and was a fully-deserved result for a tremendous team performance.

Hullbridge was the scene of a painful FA Cup defeat for Green two years ago, but only Adam Hallissey remains in the squad from that earlier game. There seldom looked like any chance of a repeat win for Hullbridge after Leverstock got off to a great start. In the 9th minute Steve Hatch lofted the ball forward from his own half to the edge of the Hullbridge box, where Hallissey nodded the ball down to Louis Austin, who beat a defender before slotting the ball under keeper Jason Baker to put Green into an early 1-0 lead.

Four minutes later Ben Butler burst forward and played in Austin, who was tackled by the last defender, but the loose ball broke nicely into the path of Lee Stobbs, who sidefooted home a second goal for Leverstock.

Hullbridge had shown little threat so far, but in the 20th minute Dan Stanley floated a free kick into the box which Carl Tasker went up to claim, but the ball somehow went through his hands, then hit the post and rebounded across goal where Mike Shelley netted from close range to pull the score back to 2-1. However, within a minute Austin was threatening again as he burst into the Hullbridge box. He was tackled, but again the ball broke kindly for Green as it ran into the path of Dan Griggs, who slotted home to immediately restore the two-goal cushion at 3-1.

Leverstock were looking well in command, and a minute before the break added another goal to their lead. Austin's long throw from near the corner flag was flicked on by a defender, and Griggs came in to slam the ball home from six yards out for his second and Green's fourth goal of the afternoon. In stoppage time Tasker pulled off a great save to turn Shelley's shot round the post, maintaining the three-goal lead.

Hullbridge had some chances early in the second half. On 48 minutes Gary Paterson played a ball over the top to Chris Brown, who beat Dan Boyce to go clean through, but Tasker came off his line to save with his legs. On 55 minutes Tasker did well to save a shot from Paterson.

Green were denied a fifth goal on the hour as Hatch had a free header from a corner, but Baker somehow deflected it over the bar. Hullbridge threatened again as Paterson shot just wide on 70 minutes, and a minute later Adam Harris got on the end of a cross, but his header was saved by Tasker. Any lingering doubts were extinguished, however, on 73 minutes as Hallissey went on a superb run down the left, before cutting into the box and pulling the ball back from the bye-line to set up Griggs, who shot home to complete his hat-trick and put Green into a 5-1 lead.

That was the way it remained for the rest of the game as Leverstock put themselves into the hat for Monday's Third Round draw, having scored 16 goals in three games to get there. It is only the second time the club has ever reached this stage of the competition.
