Saturday 22nd January 2011 FA Carlsberg Vase Fourth Round
Leverstock Green (1) 4 Austin 14, Pritchard 72, 85, Cracknell 90+1
Bemerton Heath Harlequins (1) 1 Slade 27
at Pancake Lane

Leverstock Green's remarkable FA Vase run continued as they saw off Wessex League side Bemerton Heath Harlequins 4-1 to move into the last 16 of the competition. A couple of late goals made the scoreline a little flattering to Steve Heath's side, but this was a superb performance by the Green who fully deserve their place in the Fifth Round.

The game was watched by a decent crowd of 224, plus FA and SSML officials, and two special guests Roger M. Taylor, Mayor of Dacorum, and Mike Penning, MP for Hemel Hempstead.

The Pancake Lane playing surface was in excellent condition despite the recent rain, and Leverstock made the better start. In the 4th minute Louis Austin got on the end of a cross from Lee Bircham, but his header was cleared off the line by defender Daniel Metcalfe.

Ten minutes later Dan Griggs won the ball in midfield and pushed forwards. His through ball found Adam Hallissey on the overlap, and Hallissey played the ball square to put Austin through on goal. Bemerton keeper Stuart Parsons did well to dive at Austin's feet, but the rebound broke kindly for Austin, who retrieved the loose ball and showed the composure to shoot between the two defenders on the goal line to give the Green a 14th minute lead.

Leverstock dropped off a bit after the goal, and Bemerton took advantage to get themselves back into the game. On 27 minutes Joseph Sanger got the better of Mark Shadbolt down the right, and got a good advantage call from the referee as Shadbolt fouled him. Sanger's cross to the far post was headed back across goal to find Jack Slade with the goal at his mercy, and the Bemerton captain shot home to level the scores at 1-1.

Leverstock were denied by another goalline clearance on 32 minutes as Ben Butler met Hallissey's cross with a fierce low shot, and they had a good shout for a penalty turned down three minutes later when Austin got on the end of a long ball and nodded it past the advancing Parsons, but was blocked as he tried to go round the keeper. Two minutes before the break Carl Tasker pulled off a great save to keep out a shot from Sanger, and the teams went into half time with the scores still level at 1-1.

The visitors had a chance in the opening minute of the second half when Sanger ran onto a chipped cross from Graham Mankin, but shot straight at Tasker. At the other end on 51 minutes Bill Morgan headed onto the bar from a corner.

Just before the hour mark Bemerton had two very good chances to take the lead. A cross from Metcalfe caused chaos in the Green box, and both Mankin and Jack Eves had efforts blocked on the line in the ensuing scramble. Another cross a minute later found Slade with a golden opportunity but he shot against the bar from a couple of yards out. On 64 minutes Bemerton had a free kick in a dangerous position just outside the box, but Slade's shot was well blocked by the Green wall.

Leverstock had survived their toughest period of the match, and two minutes later Steve Heath made his first change with Lewis Pritchard replacing Ben Butler. The Green went on to take control of the game. On 72 minutes Bircham swung over a free kick from the right touchline to the far post, where Steve Hatch connected with a header across goal that was probably going in without any help, but Pritchard made sure with a tap-in near the post to put Leverstock back in front at 2-1.

On 79 minutes Andrew Cracknell replaced Austin, and like Pritchard he had a big impact on the game. Within three minutes of coming on he had set up Hallissey for a shot which went just wide, and had an effort of his own from close range blocked on the line.

The game was still in the balance until five minutes from time when Pritchard chased down a long ball which Parsons was coming out to clear. Pritchard got a block on the clearance which sent the ball towards goal, and then followed it in to walk the ball home for a decisive 3-1 lead.

A fourth goal in the first minute of stoppage time as Cracknell headed home a cross from Pritchard was just icing on the cake, and a few minutes later Leverstock were celebrating their passage into the last 16. The Green will discover their fate in Monday's Fifth Round draw.
