Leverstock Green kept up their quest for a top-six finish as they earned another three points from Saturday's trip to Kingsbury London Tigers. Steve Heath was without top scorer Louis Austin through illness, but his side created a host of chances and with better finishing would have won the game comfortably. In the end it was a tense finish but a deserved win for the Green.
Green keeper Gareth Tinsley was brought in action within twenty seconds of the kick-off as he had to save a shot from Wadah Ahmidi, but it was Leverstock who opened the scoring. As Mark Shadbolt challenged for a ball in the Kingsbury box, the referee spotted defender Abdullah Hassan sticking out a hand to deflect the ball away, and awarded a penalty. The home side protested furiously, and thought they had got away with it when keeper Adam Atour dived to save Lee Bircham's kick. However, the referee adjudged that Atour had moved off his line before the ball was kicked and ordered a re-take, to even more furious protests. Atour got a piece of Bircham's second kick as well, but couldn't stop it going in to give Green an 11th minute lead.
The lead lasted barely a minute as Kingsbury attacked down the other end, and a poorly-defended cross left Gregory Ngeno to bundle home an equaliser from close range. The remainder of the first half was fractious on and off the pitch, with constant protesting from the Kingsbury players, and an argument between the two benches that also involved members of the crowd.
Things had calmed down by the time the second half began, and it saw a much-improved performance from the Leverstock side. They regained the lead in the 55th minute. Shadbolt's incisive pass from the halfway line split the Tigers defence and put Lewis Pritchard clean through. Atour stood his ground and saved Pritchard's shot with his legs, but the rebound went back to Pritchard and this time he slotted the ball home.
The lead could have been extended two minutes later when Charlie Gorman won the ball in midfield and put Jon Davies through, but he shot just wide. As Green continued to pile on the pressure, a cross from Dan Boyle was cleared by Adil Salih just ahead of Gorman. From the resulting corner Craig Preston headed wide. The third goal eventually came on 61 minutes. Bircham floated a free kick into the box, Davies went up for it, but defender Hassan got there first - only to send a headed flick past his own keeper for a 3-1 Green lead.
Kingsbury occasionally threatened on the break, with Kye Hendrix shooting just over after a good run on 68 minutes, but it looked likely that Leverstock would score more goals. Pritchard could have netted when a shot from Bill Morgan was saved by Atour, but he put the rebound over the bar, and six minutes from time Pritchard had an even better chance with a one-on-one on Atour, but shot straight at the keeper.
Green could have lived to regret those misses, as Adorito Manuel pulled the score back to 3-2 in the 88th minute with the Leverstock defence caught short on a quick break. In the end they held on for another impressive win to further strengthen their hold on sixth place.
