at Pancake Lane

Leverstock Green moved up to a season-high position of fourth in the SSML Premier Division after a superb 4-1 win which saw them swap places with Colney Heath. This match was also a rehearsal for the Premier Division Cup final in ten days time, and Leverstock will go into that match full of confidence after this result.

It was an all-round excellent display from the Green side, who opened the scoring in style in the 14th minute. Craig Preston floated a cross from midway inside the opposition half to the far side of the penalty area, and Adam Hallissey came in to meet it with the sweetest of volleys from a narrow angle, which flew past keeper Tom Blackman into the net.

It should have been 2-0 in the 26th minute, as a ball forward from Louis West was missed by two defenders to leave Louis Austin clean through, but Austin's lob over Blackman landed wide of the post. However, two minutes later Steve Hatch played a ball down the right touchline to put Lewis Pritchard clear, and he got to the bye-line before pulling the ball back across goal, and this time Austin was there to shoot home from close range and double Green's lead.

The visitors had a better spell towards the end of the half. Phil Jackman should have done better with a free header in front of goal on 37 minutes, but only got a glancing touch on it, and a minute later Ian Cooper took on West on the edge of the box before getting in a shot, but Gareth Tinsley saved it comfortably.

Leverstock had also led 2-0 when the two sides met in February before going on to lose 3-2, but this time they held that lead into the break, and rarely looked like losing it this time. In the 58th minute a corner from Lee Bircham was headed out to the edge of the box, where Steve Hatch met it with a tremendous shot that rattled the crossbar. Two minutes later Austin was threatening again when he made a mazy run into the box, and he returned the favour for the second goal as he squared for Pritchard to shoot home from six yards for a 3-0 lead.

Colney Heath then had another good spell. On 64 minutes Cooper went clean through but shot straight at Tinsley. Three minutes later they hit the bar from a corner, and Steve Barker's effort from the rebound brought a great save out of Tinsley. Cooper had another chance two minutes later but shot over the bar from close range.

A double substitution on 70 minutes brought Lee Stobbs and Ben Butler into the game, and Leverstock kicked on again. On 76 minutes a Bircham corner was headed back across goal by Craig Preston, and Austin shot over the bar. Five minutes from time Blackman did well to tip over a long-range effort from Dan Griggs. From the resulting corner Bircham played in a low cross, and Louis West met it with the cleanest of sidefoots from ten yards, a cool and nonchalant finish to put the Green 4-0 up.

The visitors pulled a scrappy goal back in the last minute from a goalmouth scramble. The ball had been cleared off the line twice before Barker put the ball over the line, the referee giving the goal after consulting his linesman. That did nothing to take the shine off another outstanding result for Steve Heath's side, who are now four short of a century of league goals with two games to play. Before that, they entertain Hatfield Town in the semi-finals of the Herts Charity Shield on Tuesday night, aiming to set up a third cup final appearance.
