After extra time
at Hemel Hempstead Town F.C.

Leverstock Green still have one more chance to take a trophy out of a great season, but they came away on the losing side from a cup final for the second time in a week after Tring Athletic came from behind to win the St Mary's Cup in extra time on May Day.

The conditions at Vauxhall Road were not ideal for football, with a dry and dusty pitch and strong winds resulting in a game that was rarely a great spectacle for the sizable crowd. Steve Heath was again without top scorer Louis Austin through injury, although Lewis Pritchard was back in the line-up today.

Pritchard had a run at goal in the 4th minute of the game, but his shot was comfortably gathered by Tring keeper Mike Underwood. A minute later Green keeper Carl Tasker had to tip a corner over the bar, and in the 7th minute Tasker was in action again, turning the ball round the post after Ryan Redford spun away from a defender on the edge of the box and hit a shot. The remainder of the first half was scrappy, with Tring having most of the ball but little in the way of chances being created. Leverstock had the slope in their favour but the wind against them.

The second half saw the Green come more into the game, with Steve Hatch pushed up front with Pritchard. Chances were still at a premium, but Leverstock had a golden opportunity to break the deadlock midway through the half. Charlie Gorman floated a free kick into the box, and as Hatch went up to head it he was barged out of the way by two Tring defenders. The referee pointed straight to the spot, and Lee Bircham blasted home the penalty to put the Green into a 68th minute lead.

Unlike Steve Heath, Tring manager Phil Casserley was not short of strikers to select from, and responded by bringing on Vinnie Iannone and later Ashley Addison. As the game wore on, Leverstock were getting pushed further and further back, and in the end were unable to hold on to their lead. Addison had only been on the pitch for two minutes when he delivered a cross from the right, and Iannone came into to head home an 87th minute equaliser for Tring.

Leverstock had a half-chance to grab an injury-time winner when Pritchard won the ball on the halfway line and broke away, but his attempted through ball to Dan Griggs was hit just too far ahead of him.

The game went into extra time, and it took less than three minutes for Tring to get their noses in front. Green lost the ball in midfield, and Chris Salmon played a ball which gave Nick Jackson a run at goal, and the former Green player ran on to drill a shot from a narrow angle past Tasker for a 2-1 lead.

Steve Heath responded by bringing on Adam Hallissey and Jon Davies for Craig Preston and Pritchard. The remainder of the first period saw Leverstock have a couple of dangerous situations inside the Tring box, but without getting an effort on goal.

The second period was similarly frustrating for Leverstock. A free kick just outside the box gave some hope, but Gorman's kick was comfortably gathered by Underwood. As the final whistle went, it was Tring who went up and collected the trophy, while the Green players had to accept another set of runners-up medals.

The Green side now has eight days to rest and recuperate before their last chance of glory in the Herts Charity Shield final. Steve Heath will be hoping to have Austin back for that one, and will be seeking to restore his side's confidence, which has taken a battering after three straight defeats.
