Match Report
Saturday 25th February 2012 Challenge Trophy semi-final
Haringey Borough (0) 2 Namquita 73, 82
Leverstock Green (1) 1 Griggs 37
at Pancake Lane

Leverstock Green missed out on another cup final as they once again failed to hang onto a half-time lead. Two goals in a ten-minute spell turned this game around and sent Haringey Borough, officially the home team despite the match taking place at Pancake Lane, into the Challenge Trophy final.

It was a closely-fought cup tie with Haringey's powerful forward line always carrying a threat, but Leverstock caused plenty of problems for them as well. In the 11th minute Bekim Culaj beat a defender and ran into the penalty area, but instead of having a go himself Culaj pulled the ball back for Adam Hallissey, who shot over the bar. Haringey came close on 20 minutes when Ben Butler headed over the bar from a corner.

Leverstock took the lead in the 37th minute, as Hallissey went on a great run down the left and crossed for Dan Griggs, who didn't make the cleanest of connections, but his shot looped over keeper Ryohei Tamai and went in off the post to open the scoring. A minute before the break Haringey looked set to equalise when a cross found Dean Fenton with a free header six yards out but Carl Tasker pulled off a great save to parry it away.

The game's major controversy came five minutes into the second half. Lewis Pritchard went into a tackle on Steve Obeng and clearly won the ball, but Obeng went down injured. The referee correctly awarded nothing, but while Obeng was on the ground he launched into a tirade of abuse aimed at the referee. The whole ground was expecting a red card, but when Obeng was back on his feet only a yellow was shown, rather making a mockery of the "Respect" campaign.

The tie continued to be finely balanced, with Haringey having more of the ball but Green looking dangerous on the break. On 70 minutes Pritchard was brought down by a push which looked inside the box, but the referee awarded a free kick just outside, and Hallissey's effort went straight to Tamai.

On 73 minutes Haringey's forward line finally made their pace tell. A ball forward put substitute Christopher Benjamin in a foot race with Craig Preston which Benjamin won to go clean through. Tasker came off his line to make a great save, but Namquita followed up and his shot found the net for the equaliser despite the presence of two Green defenders on the line.

Steve Heath made his first change on 79 minutes with Louis West coming on to play up front, but three minutes later Haringey took the lead. A ball through the middle put Fenton through on goal, and he squared for Namquita to slot home his second, following on from the two goals he scored in the league match at Pancake Lane exactly one month earlier.

Leverstock continued to battle, and they should have been back on level terms four minutes from time. Hallissey's shot from the edge of the box was only parried away by Tamai, and Pritchard had the goal at his mercy as he followed up, but his shot hit the bar.

Junior Owusu-Akonor came off the bench in the last minute, but he never got a chance and it was Haringey who came closest to another goal when Fenton smacked a shot against the bar in stoppage time.

It was another disappointment for the Green, but they must now pick themselves up and rediscover their league form with some winnable-looking games coming up in March.
