Saturday 17th March 2012 Molten Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division
Broxbourne Borough (0) 0
Leverstock Green (1) 2 Griggs 9, Butler 63 (pen)
at Goffs Lane

After four straight league defeats Leverstock Green finally got back to winning ways with a 2-0 win at Broxbourne Borough on Saturday. The result moved the Green back above neighbours Berkhamsted in the SSML Premier Division table and completed a league double over Broxbourne this season.

The early stages of the match produced chances for both sides. In the 5th minute Broxbourne had a promising attack when a through ball from Miles Mitchell-Coop gave Junior Adeoye a run at goal, but the striker's shot was way over the bar. Two minutes later Lee Bircham found Louis Austin at a free kick. Austin tried to get in a shot from a narrow angle but couldn't keep it under the bar.

At the other end Carl Tasker pulled off a good save to keep out a Broxbourne shot before Leverstock took the lead in the 9th minute. Bekim Culaj made a break down the left and delivered a cross which dropped for Dan Griggs, and Griggs finished in similar style to last week as he blasted home a shot from ten yards.

Culaj almost created a second goal five minutes later as he ran to the bye-line and pulled the ball back across goal. Broxbourne defender Lee Bradshaw made contact with the ball and luckily for him it rebounded off his own crossbar.

After a bright start the game turned rather scrappy, with chances becoming fewer. Broxbourne went close four minutes before the break as Tony Cookey exchanged passes with Adeoye before hiitting a shot that struck the top of the crossbar.

Leverstock took their lead into the break and should have extended it within thirty seconds of the restart. Lewis Pritchard made a run to the bye-line and pulled it back for Griggs, who had an easier chance than his earlier one but managed to put the ball wide from inside the six yard box.

The Green have been on the wrong end of some penalty decisions in their last few games, but on 63 minutes they finally got one in their favour. Austin made a purposeful run into the box and sidestepped a defender to get to the bye-line before the outstretched leg of Dan Broom stopped his progress. This time the referee pointed to the spot and Ben Butler netted the penalty to put Leverstock into a 2-0 lead.

Broxbourne had more of the ball in the second half, but this week the Green defence was solid and allowed little in the way of direct chances at Tasker's goal. After three substitutions late in the game Leverstock should have added further goals in stoppage time. Max Farrelly made a run to the bye-line and pulled it back for Glenn Thompson, whose effort was blocked before a follow-up effort from Culaj was also blocked on the line. Two minutes later Farrelly's pass put Seldyn Grant clean through, but keeper Alan Buck came off his line to block Grant's effort. The ball rebounded back off Grant's legs but went just wide.

In the end it was a fine result and a clean sheet, which will provide a confidence booster for Steve Heath's side as they continue with a busy run of games. Next up for the Green is a home match against in-form Oxhey Jets on Tuesday night.
