at Airedale Park

The officials and supporters of Leverstock Green stayed around to applaud their side off the pitch after this game, and it was richly deserved after a marvellous performance from the team. After two games in which Leverstock had held out under pressure and snatched a win, tonight it was the Green who were very much the dominant side and scored the goals their display merited.

Leverstock went close to taking the lead in the 8th minute. Adiel Mannion received a crossfield ball, beat a defender and ran at goal, but his shot was across goal and just wide. They didn't have to wait too long for an opening goal though. In the 15th minute Curt Dizon made a great run down the right before pulling the ball back for skipper Adam Hallissey to shoot home low from the edge of the box.

The Green were well in control, always keeping the ball moving with speed and accuracy. There was variation in their game, utilising short passing, long passing and even occasional route one tactics. In the 23rd minute Tobi Akin headed down a long ball into the path of Hallissey, who shot just wide. Two minutes later Akin showed excellent footwork as he jinked past a defender before putting in a cross which James Dabbs slid in to meet as he stabbed the ball home for a second Green goal.

It should have been 3-0 in the 28th minute. Kris Tyrell's chipped pass put Hallissey away to set up Alfee Robbins for a shot six yards out, but Robbins' shot was deflected over the bar by a defender on the line. The referee blew for a penalty, thinking it had come off the defender's hand, but changed his mind after consulting his assistant. The consensus in the ground was that it was the correct decision.

Green keeper David Bailey had little to do, not least because his side was working so hard, always getting back quickly to cover when Holmer threatened to break. His first real save came in the 39th minute, diving to gather an effort from Dean Alley. A minute later Leverstock went close to another when Dizon's cross just eluded the head of Robbins at the far post.

Leverstock went into the break with a two-goal lead after a performance of almost non-stop intensity. The question was whether they could keep it up in the second half, and the answer was largely "yes". A rare lapse in concentration at the back in the 62nd minute allowed Holmer sub Darren Crane to go through on goal, but Bailey saved brilliantly, turning the ball round the post from point-blank range and preventing a potential game-changing moment. Holmer keeper Derek Lewis produced an equally good save four minutes later as Hallissey came in to head home a superb cross from Ben Gill, only to see his effort somehow beaten away.

It was the home side who began to tire towards the end of the game, not surprisingly after the Leverstock side had kept them chasing shadows for most of the night. Dabbs went close with a couple of long-range efforts, but the third goal eventually arrived in the 81st minute. Two Holmer defenders got in each other's way as they tried to clear the ball, and it dropped for Akin who was able to virtually walk it into the net. The assistant flagged for offside, which couldn't have been the case as the ball came off an opponent, and the referee correctly overruled him to allow the goal.

In the first minute of stoppage time Dabbs got on the end of a cross from Mannion to shoot home his second and his side's fourth of the night, putting the icing on the result. Green manager Steve Benitez was rightly delighted by his team's display, which embodied the footballing philosophy he hoped to bring to the club. It is still very much early days, but winning your first four away league games and keeping three successive clean sheets is an impressive start by anyone's standards.

Leverstock return to cup action this coming Saturday as they travel to Combined Counties League side Bedfont Sports in the first qualifying round of the FA Vase.
