at Hatton Road

Leverstock Green's interest in the senior FA competitions is over for another season after an early exit from the Vase. Green followers would have hoped their team could have carried their form from Tuesday night's impressive win at Holmer Green into this one, but today's performance fell well short of that standard. The Green were wearing their new kit, sponsored by 21st Century Transport, for the first time.

At a ground which is in close proximity to the Heathrow runways, it was the home side who got off to a flying start. The Leverstock defence, which hadn't conceded a goal in the previous three games, allowed Bedfont centre-forward Jordan Vidal to run at them without a challenge, and Vidal needed no further invitation to drive a shot past David Bailey from the edge of the box for the opener in the 4th minute.

Leverstock could have got a quick equaliser, but Bedfont keeper Dane Buss produced a spectacular save to tip Adam Hallissey's free kick over the bar on 8 minutes, and two minutes later was there to save again when Hallissey got on the end of Curt Dizon's cross with a header. Instead it was Bedfont that doubled their lead in the 14th minute as Vidal intercepted a stray pass from Mark Shadbolt and ran through to finish in clinical style again.

Bedfont had further chances to extend their lead, but eventually took their 2-0 lead into the break. The Leverstock side had struggled to get going - the tempo and the quick movement from the previous game was not there today. There were moments of promise, but the final ball was too often lacking and chances were few.

The second half proceeded in a similar fashion. Bailey produced a good save on 48 minutes to turn a shot from Gavin Bamford round the post, and denied Vidal his hat-trick with another save on 63 minutes. However, a minute later the defence was not concentrating when a free kick was floated in from the halfway line, and Jack Watts was unmarked to send a looping header over Bailey into the net for a 3-0 Bedfont lead.

Stefan Owen-Edwards came off the bench in the 72nd minute to replace Tobi Akin, who will miss the next three games through suspension. Three minutes after coming on he very nearly got his side back in the game with a well-struck free kick from 30 yards that had Buss beaten but cannoned off the post. That one turned out to be just a sighter, as on 79 minutes Green won another free kick just outside the box, and this time Owen-Edwards' effort was perfectly curled just inside the post to pull the score back to 3-1.

It could have got even more interesting a minute later when Hallissey was put through on goal, but was denied by a saving tackle inside the box. There were shouts for a penalty, but the referee was unmoved. That was the end of Leverstock's mini-revival, and three minutes from time Nduka Azagba came in at the far post to get on the end of a cross from Watts to shoot home a fourth goal for Bedfont, who fully deserved their victory on the day, and go on to visit Oxhey Jets in the next round.

It was a disappointing day for the Green, but manager Steve Benitez will be working to lift his side again, and is bringing in more players to strengthen his squad. Leverstock return to league action this coming Tuesday night with a home game against Stotfold.
