Saturday 29th September 2012 Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division
Harefield United (0) 1 Kunani 73
Leverstock Green (1) 3 Akin 38, 62, Lyon 48
at Preston Park

It had been a full month since Leverstock Green last played an away league match, but they picked up from where they left off with another win which takes their tally to a maximum 15 points from their five away games so far. Steve Benitez's side were well worth their win today, and created many more chances than the three they scored from.

The Green went into the match without skipper Adam Hallissey, who was unavailable today, and with several other injuries Steve Benitez had a thin squad to select from. However, his side continued to play their flowing football and soon got a grip on this match. Tobi Akin headed just wide from a free kick in the 9th minute, and had a good shout for a penalty turned down in the 20th minute when he went down in the box after being set up by Marvin Tabi's run.

Akin himself set up a chance for Brad Wadkins on 24 minutes, but his shot was saved. A minute later Akin was guilty of one of the most glaring misses you will see on a football pitch. Akin intercepted a back pass to go clean through. Harefield keeper Craig Garrett blocked his shot, but the ball spun back towards goal. Akin only had to touch the ball to put it home, but falling backwards he somehow managed to scoop the ball over the bar from a couple of yards out!

The chances continued to come. Within the space of two minutes James Dabbs shot over the bar from a good chance, Curt Dizon's shot was was saved after a mazy run, a shot from Dabbs was saved and Akin's effort on the rebound was deflected wide by a defender's boot.

Finally, in the 38th minute Leverstock scored their overdue goal. Adiel Mannion went on a driving run down the right before sending over a cross which was not dealt with, and the ball dropped for Akin, who this time displayed his instinctive finishing to lash home a first time shot from six yards.

Harefield had already been forced into one substitution in the first half, and made another two at half time in an attempt to get back into the game. However, within three minutes of the restart the Green had doubled their lead. In a goalmouth scramble following a corner, Wadkins, Dizon and Akin all had shots blocked before Sam Lyon finally forced the ball home at the far post for his first goal in a Green shirt and a 2-0 lead.

Garrett had to pull off another good save from Akin on 59 minutes, but the third goal wasn't long in coming. Mannion played a pinpoint ball from his own half to put Akin clean through, and he rounded Garrett before slotting home his second of the match.

The lead was looking comfortable, but a rare lapse in concentration at the back allowed Harefield to pull a goal back on 73 minutes through substitute Sammi Kunani. Leverstock now had all three subs on, and though they all did a creditable job on the field, their relative lack of match fitness compared to the players they replaced meant that the performance lost a bit of its pace and intensity, and the home side began to create a series of chances that might have seen them salvage something from the game. Lyon had to clear a shot off the line on 78 minutes, and Grant Kemp shot wide six minutes later after David Bailey palmed away a corner.

Leverstock were still creating chances at the other end, though. On 86 minutes Wadkins played a slick one-two with Dabbs to go clean through. Wadkins tried to place his shot in the corner of the net but Garrett saved. A minute from time a Harefield corner was cleared to the halfway line, where Stefan Owen-Edwards held the ball up before playing a great ball to Dizon, who ran to the edge of the box only to strike the bar with his shot. Harefield continued to press during stoppage time, and Bailey had to pull off a good save from Max Hubbard's shot.

However, the Green came out of it with their 3-1 win, and they must now take that form forward into a tough encounter on Tuesday night when title-chasing Dunstable Town are the visitors to Pancake Lane.
