at Pancake Lane

Leverstock Green manager Steve Benitez was full of admiration for the Dunstable Town side after they gave his side a bit of a football lesson in Tuesday night's match at Pancake Lane. Title favourites Dunstable returned to the top of the league with this win and are well worth that position on the evidence of this display. Benitez said "they did the simple things well".

Having said that, Leverstock could have been two goals up before Dunstable scored, as they had two great chances. In the 5th minute James Dabbs broke forward from his own half and threaded a great ball to put Tobi Akin through on goal, however Dunstable keeper Lewis Kidd got a hand to Akin's shot and the ball hit the inside of the post and rebounded back into play. In the 20th minute it was Akin who pushed forward and played a pass to put Marvin Tabi clean through, but Tabi scooped his shot over the bar.

Dunstable's first effort on goal came in the 22nd minute as Lee Roache turned on the edge of the box and shot just wide. A minute later Newman Carney found plenty of space inside the box but David Bailey turned his shot round the post.

The opening goal came in the 27th minute in simple fashion. Jonathan Barnett floated in a free kick from the halfway line, nobody tracked the run of Fabio Bufano across the six yard box and Bufano was able to finish with a cheeky flick past Bailey.

Bailey pulled off another good save in the 31st minute as Tony Burnett got on the end of a corner with a header that bounced up off the ground and forced Bailey to dive full length to tip it over the bar. In the 38th minute Leverstock were staring down the whites of keeper Kidd's eyes again as a pass from Akin put Adiel Mannion through on goal, but again the chance was missed as Mannion shot straight at Kidd.

Those missed chances proved costly as Dunstable added a second goal a minute before the break, Burnett wriggling free on the edge of the box before striking a tremendous shot that gave Bailey no chance. There might have been a third just after but Jonathan Cooper shot over the bar from close range.

Early in the second half Benitez gave a debut to George House, newly signed from Tring Athletic, bringing him off the bench to replace Tabi. However, Dunstable effectively killed the game off with a third goal in the 53rd minute. A corner was punched away by Bailey, but the ball came straight back into the box and Lee Roache was able to shoot home easily.

The game rather fizzled out after that with Dunstable well in control. They went close to a fourth goal on 62 minutes as Cooper ran through the Green defence but struck the bar with his shot. Leverstock kept passing the ball around but weren't able to create any chances, with their best effort being a shot over the bar from Mannion on 74 minutes.

A fourth goal did eventually arrive for Dunstable in stoppage time, an impressive effort from Chris Francis who turned on a sixpence on the edge of the box before driving a shot past Bailey.

It was a tough evening for the Green side, but they will not meet sides this good every week, and this coming Saturday they will be trying to keep their run of away wins going when they visit Hillingdon Borough.
