Holmer Green (0) 0
at Pancake Lane

Leverstock Green ended a winless run of six league games and completed their first league double of the season as they comfortably beat struggling Holmer Green at Pancake Lane on Saturday. The confidence gained from Tuesday night's near-miss against Aylesbury United clearly put the Leverstock side in good stead for this one as they continued to play some good football and combined it with a show of classy finishing.

Veteran forward Mark Burfoot came into the side for his first start of the season, and in place of the unavailable Chris Cutler there was a debut for recent signing Tunde Owolabi, another to have played in the Chesham United reserve side.

There was little in the way of chances early in the game, and the first one fell to the visitors on 14 minutes when a ball from Sean O'Donnell found Dean Allen in space inside the box, but his shot went across goal and wide. The first chance for Leverstock came in the 20th minute when Kris Tyrell cut in from the left touchline and squared for James Dabbs, whose shot was turned round the post by keeper Dan Little.

Two minutes later Adam Hallissey's pass put Burfoot in behind the Holmer defence, and Burfoot ran on before laying the ball off to Tobi Akin, who neatly slotted it past Little to put Leverstock into a 1-0 lead.

Holmer had a chance to equalise on 24 minutes when Billy Fraser's pass put Allen through on goal, but he mishit his eventual shot well wide. This was the start of a spell when the visitors put Leverstock under some pressure. On 29 minutes a free kick from near the goalline went across the face of goal, and two minutes later when Leverstock were struggling to clear their lines Steve Nott-Macaire got in a shot which brought a good save out of Tom Coulton.

Leverstock needed a second goal, and it duly arrived on 35 minutes. Brad Wadkins received the ball midway inside the Holmer half and headed for the box, cutting inside past two defenders before firing home a low shot past Little for an excellent goal.

In the last minute of the half Leverstock were attacking again. A cross from Tyrell bounced up off the turf and struck the hand of defender Ryan La Crette, and the referee immediately pointed to the penalty spot. Tobi Akin put his miss in Tuesday night's shoot-out behind him as he stepped up to take the kick and this time found the net to send Leverstock into the break with a healthy 3-0 lead.

The second half was only five minutes old when Leverstock matched their score at Airedale Park back at the end of August. Wadkins floated in a superb cross from the right touchline and Burfoot got on the end of it to sidefoot the ball home goal number four.

There could have been another one five minutes later when Burfoot headed down a cross from Marvin Tabi, but Akin's attempt at a hat-trick was denied by a block. Holmer might have pulled a goal back on a couple of occasions, but Coulton came quickly off his line to shut down a run from Allen on 63 minutes, and the same player put the ball over the bar from close range on 77 minutes. The Leverstock side held their discipline well and came away with a deserved clean sheet.

On Tuesday night the Green will attempt to win only their second cup tie of the season when they host Chipperfield Corinthians in the quarter-finals of the St Mary's Cup. Next Saturday they travel to face the division's bottom side, London Tigers.
