at Pancake Lane

Leverstock Green came away from another home game with no points and what looks like a heavy defeat to AFC Dunstable, but they will look back with plenty of regret from this game - they had at least nine good chances during the match but only found the net once, and a disastrous second goal turned the game against them.

The Green side had played well and dominated the first half. They worked hard to pressure the AFC side and caused plenty of problems for their defence. In the 16th minute a pass from James Dabbs found Curt Dizon, who cut inside and struck a great shot which AFC keeper Ryan Darby did well to tip over the bar.

On 25 minutes Kris Tyrell played a one-two with Alfee Robbins before getting in a cross which Tobi Akin got his boot to but couldn't divert it on target. Seconds later Dabbs slipped a pass through to Chris Cutler, whose square ball across goal was just too far ahead of Akin, who went close again a minute later when Robbins put him through, only for Darby to palm away his shot.

AFC Dunstable had a goal disallowed in the 21st minute for offside, and had another chance on 29 minutes when Hussain Jalloh was through, but Tom Coulton came out to save with his legs. A minute later Coulton turned defence into attack as he came out to clear and played the ball out wide to Robbins. The ball was worked onwards to Dizon, who shot just wide of the target. There was a similar chance for Dabbs on 34 minutes after Dizon did well to win the ball from a defender, but again the shot was off target.

The Green should have gone into the break in front, but instead they went in behind. Hayden Wills' corner on 40 minutes was not adequately cleared, and Billy Fleury hit a low shot through a crowd of players past Coulton to put his side in front somewhat against the run of play.

Leverstock opened the second half with hopes of getting back into the game, but four minutes in they fell further behind thanks to an inexplicable error from keeper Coulton, who hadn't put a foot wrong in the first half. Lee Burgoyne played an aimless high cross into the box which Coulton should have caught easily under no pressure, but the young keeper dropped the ball and could only watch helplessly as Wills had an easy tap-in.

Another Green chance went begging on 52 minutes as Dizon spun past a defender to go clean through, but screwed his eventual shot well wide. Two minutes later the game went even further away from them. The Green defence was shouting in vain for an offside flag as Jalloh received the ball from a free kick, but none came and Jalloh played a square ball for Jay Blackett to shoot home a third goal for AFC Dunstable.

Still there were further chances for Leverstock. On 56 minutes Akin was through again but lifted his shot over the bar, and two minutes later Dizon somehow had a shot blocked from close range when it looked easier to score. Their misfortune continued on 62 minutes when another expected offside flag did not materialise. James Paull went clear down the right and squared into the box for Wills, who went to the ground under a clumsy challenge from Cutler. The referee pointed straight to the spot, and although Coulton saved Blackett's penalty, he could do nothing about the rebound which went straight back to Blackett to score at the second attempt.

Leverstock finally found the net in the 65th minute when Dizon's pass put substitute Adiel Mannion through, and Mannion slotted the ball nicely past Darby to pull a goal back. There were further chances in the remainder of the game, but again the target proved elusive, and the Green were denied what looked like a penalty in the closing minutes when Herve Zaha appeared to be brought down in the box.

A disappointing result in the end, although nothing can be taken away from AFC, who took the chances that fell to them. Nevertheless Leverstock manager Steve Benitez can take some positives from this one, not least in the way his side played during the first half, and the number of chances they created even though their finishing was not up to scratch today.
