at Pancake Lane

Honours were even in tonight's Dacorum Derby at Pancake Lane, as Leverstock Green came back from 3-1 down to level at 3-3 and hung on for the point despite playing most of the second half with only ten men. It was good entertainment for the crowd of 112 on a chilly Tuesday evening.

Visitors Berkhamsted almost took the lead within the opening thirty seconds of the match. Gavin Smith's back header didn't quite reach Kieron Jimmy, and Josh Chamberlain nipped in to head the ball over Jimmy, but it came back off the bar and Jamie Gavin's shot from the rebound was saved by the Green keeper.

Berko certainly had the better of the early stages, and could have gone in front on 10 minutes when Ed Canham came in to meet a corner but headed wide. They eventually found the net on 23 minutes from a quick break. Frankie Jowle crossed from the right and Gavin was unmarked in the box to head home.

However, within two minutes Leverstock were attacking at the other end and Shakir Agada was brought down inside the box. The referee pointed straight to the spot and Liam Hind put away the penalty to level the scores at 1-1.

Berko almost went back in front on 31 minutes when a free kick to the far post was headed back across goal for Chamberlain, whose header was superbly headed off the line by Dave Sexton. However, the resulting corner was again crossed to the far post, again the ball was headed back across goal, and this time there was no-one to stop Chamberlain heading home from inches out for a 2-1 Berko lead.

On 38 minutes Chamberlain was denied as his free kick was turned wide by Jimmy. However, once again Leverstock's defending of corners let them down as Dale Sears won the header at the far post for a 3-1 lead.

For the second time, though, Berko switched off after scoring, and Leverstock were back in the game within two minutes. Mark Shadbolt crossed from the left, and Agada dummied to leave Hind to fire home a shot from the edge of the box.

Berko took their 3-2 lead into the break, but it only lasted five minutes of the second half. Agada's pass put Gareth Long through on goal, and although Long's first touch was heavy, he still had the ball when he was brought down by Carl Tasker. The former Green keeper got away with a yellow card, but Leverstock had another penalty, and again Hind made no mistake to complete his hat-trick and level it up at 3-3. Hind has now scored Leverstock's last six goals over four games.

Again there was drama soon after a goal. Within a minute of getting back level, the Green were down to ten men when Dwaine Bryan received a straight red card for a challenge on Jowle.

Most would have expected Berkhamsted to take control of the game after the sending off, but it went through something of a quiet spell. It wasn't until the last ten minutes that the visitors started putting serious pressure on the Green goal, but Leverstock were proving much more capable of defending crosses inside their own box than in the first half. The closest Berko came to winning it was in the first minute of stoppage time when a well-struck shot from Kieran Turner was brilliantly saved by Jimmy. The resulting corner caused an almighty scramble in which Berko had the ball in the net, but the referee had already blown for a foul on Jimmy.

Leverstock were hanging on by the end, but they battled well all night and deserved their point. They have only two days to recover before their next game, at home to second-placed Ampthill Town on Thursday night.
