A stunning last-minute winner from Dene Gardner brough Leverstock Green their first league win in eight games, and it was a well-deserved three points from an excellent performance. Leverstock had much the greater share of chances and only an impressive display from Hertford keeper Ini Amaegbe prevented them from sealing the win earlier.
The Green were missing two of their usual back four today, but this allowed 17-year old Luke Warner-Eley a rare start for the first team and he was one of Leverstock's star performers on the day. On 14 minutes Warner-Eley played a good ball down the touchline to Billy Smith, who skipped past a defender before threading a pass through to Callum Wright, but Amaegbe pulled off his first save of the day to keep out Wright's shot with his legs.
Three minutes later Wright turned supplier as he put Dene Gardner through on goal, but again Amaegbe prevailed in a one-on-one situation by saving with his legs. On 19 minutes Liam Hind had the ball in the net after Amaegbe appeared to drop the ball from a free kick, but the referee adjudged that Hind had fouled the keeper and disallowed the goal. Hind was denied again on 28 minutes when his rasping shot from the edge of the box was tipped over the bar by Amaegbe after a good run from Warner-Eley set up the chance.
Having had all the good chances, it was unfortunate for Leverstock that they went into the break 1-0 down after Tommy Wade exploited the lack of height in the Green back line to head home a corner in the 40th minute.
Leverstock continued to push forward with purpose in the second half. Hind's pass put Dene Gardner through on goal again, but again his shot couldn't beat Amaegbe. However, the rebound was not cleared by Hertford, and Hind got the ball back and hit a low shot from outside the box which Amaegbe got a hand to, but couldn't prevent from trickling over the line for a 50th minute Leverstock equaliser.
The combination of Hind and Gardner looked promising all through the game, and four minutes later Hind put Gardner through again, but Gardner's attempted lob over Amaegbe didn't have quite enough height.
In the closing stages the game could have gone either way. Hertford had a chance to win it in the 89th minute when Wade set up Sam Ruff with a shooting chance inside the box, but Ruff blazed it well over the bar, to the dismay of the large crowd gathered for Hertford's annual "Fans Day". Instead it was Leverstock who won it in the 90th minute, as yet again a pass from Hind put Dene Gardner through on goal, and this time Gardner made no mistake as he finished superbly, firing a shot past Amaegbe into the roof of the net for a 2-1 Leverstock lead which they held onto through a lengthy period of stoppage time.
With this result Leverstock completed a league double over Hertford, and it leaves them in good spirits for their last two games of the season - a local derby at home to Tring Athletic in the league next Saturday, and the St Mary's Cup Final against Oxhey Jets at Vauxhall Road two days later.
