Report by Kevin Salter

A magnificent season was finished off in style with the Whites coming out on top in their toughest test of the season to not only win the League Cup but also complete the double.

The Whites looked all at sea in the opening 15 minutes as nerves seemed to take hold of the entire team, and again and again they gave the ball away cheaply and had several close escapes at the back.

Gradually Levy began to gather some composure and get a foothold in the game and with individual battles raging across the pitch the possession evened out and The Whites began to create opportunities of their own and forced several corners.

A bruising first half finished goalless.

The second half saw Levy kick down the slight slope and with the wind behind they really took the game to Flitwick and as their opponents began to tire Ellen Salter began to torment them down the left hand flank and free kicks were awarded in an ever increasing frequency. Laura Bailey was called into action on several occasions in goal but overall The Whites looked the more threatening side and it was against the run of play when Flitwick took the lead direct from a long range free kick on 65 minutes past the unsighted goalkeeper into the bottom left hand corner.

Shortly afterwards Cally Salter saw a free kick crash off the crossbar and as The Whites began to throw caution to the wind Ellen Salter was also unlucky to see a long range shot tipped onto the bar by the Flitwick Keeper.

As the minutes began to tick by Levy surged forward with wave after wave of attack and on 82 minutes the referee awarded a penalty for a hand ball - Ellen Salter duly stepped up to convert into the corner for the equaliser and a frantic last few minutes came and went without further score.

The 1st period of extra time saw Frankie Novelli take over in goal from Laura and battle resumed once more. As the game wore on tired legs and limbs began to tell on both sides and with Cally struggling with a badly strained wrist, Mia Hickey having to be withdrawn with cramp in both calves after a tireless display, the Whites were further depleted as they lost Leigh Burrows to cramp.

A quick tactical change in the second period of extra time saw Leigh take over in goal and Frankie released back into the outfield and the scoreline remained level as the game seemed destined for penalties.

In the 118th minute with just 2 minutes of extra time remaining Pru Squires-Adams gathered the ball on the half way line and played an early ball into Natasha who ran fully 35 yards before dispatching a clinical finish past the onrushing goalkeeper to put Levy into the lead.

The last 2 minutes seemed to take an age but The Whites held on for a precious victory to finish the season in style.

This truly was a squad performance requiring each and every player to wring every ounce of remaining energy to get the job done and all of the girls were heroes today. Special mentions for all three goalkeepers, the two centre backs Emma and Leigh who were both rocks at the back and Ellen and Natasha for the composure they showed under great pressure to score the goals.

The brings to a close the opening 2 year chapter of The Whites in which they have won 2 League Titles, 2 League Cups, had 2 County Cup runs and several tournament victories - a new chapter will begin which unfortunately will not include many of these superstars as they embark on their University adventures, but they have all been a huge credit to themselves, their parents and Leverstock Green Football Club.
