Leverstock Green added another hard-earned three points to their tally and kept their first clean sheet in the league this season, as Liam Hind's penalty in first half stoppage time was enough for a 1-0 win at Biggleswade United on Tuesday night.
The home side had the better of the early exchanges, with Jack Boyd firing just over the bar after a Kieran Jimmy punch had got as far as the edge of the box on 11 minutes. A slip on the edge of the box from Liam O'Keefe presented Boyd with a great chance on 17 minutes, but Jimmy came quickly off his line to make a great save.
Leverstock's first decent effort on goal came in the 21st minute when Timi Salako won the ball and played in Hind, but his shot went just wide. Towards the end of the half the Green were having the better of things, and Mark Woolley shot just over the bar from a Salako corner in the 44th minute.
As the clock ticked into stoppage time, a cross from Paul Somers was blocked by the hand of defender Luke Jones, and the referee pointed straight to the penalty spot. Hind tucked away the spot kick with virtually the last kick of the half to send Leverstock into the break with a 1-0 lead after a first half performance that was a vast improvement from Saturday.
Hind almost added a second from a free kick ten minutes into the second half, but the Biggleswade keeper managed to divert it away with his legs, and a minute later another long-range effort from Hind wasn't too far over.
As the half wore on, the home side started to get the better of things. On 61 minutes Gavin Smith had to clear a cross from Josiah Hunte off the line. On 75 minutes Adam Randall beat Sledge Mubama on the left and put in a cross which found Ryan Dobson at the near post but Jimmy saved.
Hunte could have equalised three minutes later when he was clean through, but shot over the bar. At the other end on 81 minutes a great ball from Hind put Callum Wright away, but Wright's eventual shot from a narrow angle went across the face of goal.
Three minutes from Biggleswade were in again when a ball over the top put Boyd through on goal, but his shot was wide. Leverstock were hanging on a bit by this stage, but almost clinched it in stoppage time when Louis Bircham's pass put Hind in on goal, but he shot into the side netting.
In the end the Green held on for the points, which should be a confidence booster for Saturday's trip to high-flying Harefield United in the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup.
