at Second Meadow

Leverstock Green's historic FA Cup run continues after a dramatic last-gasp winner took them past Biggleswade United and into the Second Round Qualifying, where they could be drawn against clubs playing anything up to three levels higher. It was a magnificent team performance, and after suffering two league defeats in the past week, to recover from going a goal down today and coming back to win shows what great character this Green squad possesses.

The Green should have been in front within 30 seconds of the kick-off. A slip in the Biggleswade defence left David Sobers clean through on goal, but he shot straight at home keeper Rui Goncalves. In the 4th minute Sobers had another chance from a pass by Louis Bircham, but his eventual shot was over the bar.

The game went through a spell where there were no clear chances for either side, but in the 38th minute another excellent pass from Bircham put Callum Wright through, but as he tried to take the ball round Goncalves he was dispossessed. A minute later Green keeper Kieran Jimmy had to come racing out of his area to tackle Jack Boyd with his feet. Before half time there was another chance when Lee Gardner's pass gave Bircham a run at goal, but despite twisting and turning on the edge of the box he couldn't fashion a shooting chance.

The first half had been as tight as the league meeting between these sides had been two weeks earlier. The second half opened with Leverstock looking much the livelier of the two sides, and on 51 minutes there was another near miss. Timi Salako fed Paul Somers down the left, and Somers cut in and beat a defender before laying off to Bircham on the overlap, but Bircham's shot went over.

Having started the second half so well, it was a blow for the Green side when they fell behind on 54 minutes from another goal conceded from a corner, although it was a quality strike from Lee Bilcock, who received the ball on the far side of the penalty area and brought it down to hit a shot into the top corner of the net.

Leverstock almost hit back within a minute when Somers got to the bye-line and pulled it back for Bircham, but his shot was curling away and just missed the far post.

Green manager Dene Gardner made his first substitution on 72 minutes, bringing on Dene Gardner for Sledge Mubama, and it proved to be an inspired change. Within a minute Gardner was set free down the right and drove in a low cross. Any one of three players could have finished it off, but it was home defender Adam Drakulic who got the touch to turn the ball past his own keeper for the equaliser.

Leverstock had their tails up now, and two further substitutions were made with ten minutes left as Billy Smith and Jimmy Talbot came into the game. These changes proved to be as effective as the first substitution as the two players were instrumental in creating the winning goal as the clock was just ticking over 90 minutes. Talbot's pass set Smith away down the left, and as Smith cut into the penalty area it looked like he might shoot himself from a narrow angle, but instead Smith put the ball across goal, where Sobers stuck out a boot and just managed to divert the ball inside the post to send the Leverstock contingent into ecstacy.

The side managed to hold out through the remainder of stoppage time for a thoroughly deserved win. There were fine performances all across the park. Kieran Jimmy and his back four of Somers, Mubama, Gavin Smith and Liam O'Keefe were all solid and dealt well with the threat of the Biggleswade forward line. Skipper Lee Gardner marshalled the midfield, and the runs of Salako, Bircham, Wright and Damien Cruickshank caused problems for the home side all afternoon. Sobers was lively up front all afternoon and it was appropriate that he should score the winner at the end having missed such a good chance at the start of the game. The depth of the squad is shown by the fact that Dan Lake, Chad Pinching, Ricky Dash and David Bailey - all good enough for the first team - were unused on the bench today, plus Luke Warner-Eley wasn't even included in the squad having played and scored four goals for the under-18s on Thursday night.

Leverstock now await the draw on Monday lunchtime to find out their opponents in the next round. They have no game in midweek, and are at home to Colney Heath in the league next Saturday.
