Leverstock Green (1) 1 D.Gardner 45+2
at Sun Postal Sports Club

Leverstock Green suffered another heavy defeat on Saturday, this time to newly-promoted Sun Sports, currently sitting second in the SSML Premier Division table. It was a very lacklustre performance by the Green side, with some poor defending contributing to their downfall, and going forward they created little to trouble the home keeper.

Leverstock made a bright start to the game, and might have taken the lead in the 4th minute when Luke Warner-Eley and Callum Wright combined to set up Adam Wallace, but he didn't catch his shot properly and it was comfortably saved.

However, the home side were always looking to push forward and soon started to create chances. In the 10th minute Ashley Lewis headed wide from a good position, and five minutes later a deflected shot from Elton Scarlett was only turned over the bar by a bit of improvisation from David Bailey.

Former Green striker James Armstrong, one of four ex-Leverstock players in the Sun starting line-up, shot just wide from Matt Jarvis' free kick on 30 minutes, but on 38 minutes Sun finally took the lead when Simeon Fearon burst into the box and fired home a shot into the back of the net.

Leverstock looked like going into the break only a goal down, but in the last minute of the half Armstrong turned in the box and slotted home a second goal of the kind that Green supporters were accustomed to seeing during his five years at the club. However, in stoppage time the Sun side switched off and allowed Dene Gardner to go through the middle and pull a goal back with a shot that keeper Ross Hampton could have done better with.

That should have given the Leverstock side renewed hope for the second half, but in truth they rarely looked like rescuing the game. The Sun side always looked dangerous, and when Ashley Lewis took advantage of some dreadful defending to shoot home the third goal on 62 minutes, the game was over.

Further late strikes from Fearon on 83 minutes and substitute Richard Pearce on 87 minutes compounded the misery for the Green followers, who have now seen their side concede five goals on three successive Saturdays. Sun Sports fully deserved their win and look worthy of their high-flying status in the table.

By contrast, Leverstock's midweek form has been good recently, and they will hope to pick that up again on Tuesday night when Oxhey Jets visit Pancake Lane for a league match, kick-off 7.30 pm.
