Leverstock Green exited the Challenge Trophy at the first round stage in Tuesday night's tie. It was a good effort and a much better performance than ten days earlier from the Leverstock side, but still wasn't enough to get the better of Sun Sports.

Sun should have taken the lead on 37 minutes when Dom David was clean through and sidestepped Green keeper Craig Garrett, but shot into the side netting. A minute later Karl Penny was through but his shot was deflected wide. However on 40 minutes Leverstock couldn't clear the ball from a Sun throw and Penny drilled the ball into the bottom corner.

Sun had three chances to extend their lead in the opening minute of the second half, but the first hit the bar, Garrett saved the effort on the rebound, and a third attempt from close range went over the bar. Garrett pulled off another great save on 58 minutes to keep out a shot from Penny.

Leverstock got back into the game with a well-worked equaliser on 73 minutes. A great ball from Curtis Donaldson bypassed the full back and put Louis Bircham through on goal, and Bircham finished well, going round the keeper before slotting home.

There was another chance three minutes later when Jack Halcomb played the ball out to Donaldson, who squared into the box for Chris Blunden, but his shot was deflected wide. From the resulting corner, Leverstock lost the ball, Sun broke away quickly and after a first effort was blocked, Penny slid home the loose ball to put Sun back in front at 2-1.

Three minutes from time it looked to be all over when Scott Bonner put Sun 3-1 up from a corner, but there was still life in the game as Bircham pulled a goal back with another good finish in the 90th minute. Deep into stoppage time there was a chance to send the game into penalties when a corner dropped for Damien Cruickshank six yards out, but he couldn't get a shot away, and it was not to be.

Leverstock now face a home league game against former boss Steve Heath and his table-topping AFC Dunstable side on Saturday.
