Leverstock Green were unable to follow up last Saturday's win as they fell to a heavy defeat in a wind-affected game at Biggleswade United. Three late goals made the score look worse than it should have been, but there is no doubt that the home side played the conditions better in both halves and deserved their win.
Leverstock played against the wind during the first half and came under heavy pressure from Biggleswade for most of the half. Akwafei Ajeakwa had a chance in the 11th minute but ballooned his shot over the bar. On 23 minutes Craig Garrett palmed away a shot from Nick Elliott, and on 34 minutes Garrett saved again, keeping out Tom Cookman's shot from a narrow angle.
A mix-up in the home penalty area on 36 minutes offered a good chance to Dan Griggs, but he shot wide. Three minutes later Curtis Donaldson made a run at goal but shot over the bar. Two minutes before the break Biggleswade missed another good chance when Elliott headed wide from Cookman's cross.
Leverstock had done well to keep the scores level during a difficult half, and would have expected to show more as an attacking force in the second half with the wind in their favour, but again it was the home side that started better. Three minutes into the half Ajeakwa had another good chance but shot over from six yards out.
Biggleswade continued to press the Leverstock side high up the pitch and play the ball on the ground and out wide, and they eventually got their deserved goal on 65 minutes when a cross from deep took a deflection and dropped inside the box for Lee Bilcock to score from close range.
Nyasha Sagwete almost added a second on 75 minutes with a blistering long-range effort that flew just over the bar, but Leverstock went close three minutes later when an overhead effort from Donaldson was tipped over the bar. Seven minutes from time Louis Bircham played the ball out to Jack Gilmartin, whose cross-cum-shot went across the face of goal.
The game was still in the balance until three minutes from time when Joe Horwood was adjudged to have brought down Cookman and the referee awarded a penalty. Ajeakwa scored from the spot despite Garrett getting a hand to it, and it proved to be the decisive moment.
The home side added two further goals in stoppage time when Ajeakwa finished from Cookman's cross and Cookman scored himself when put through on goal.
With four players making their first team debuts today this is still a Leverstock side in transition under the new management team, but they face a tough game at home to title-chasing Hoddesdon Town on Tuesday night before another crucial six-pointer away to Harefield United next Saturday.
