Oxhey Jets (1) 2 Alexander 25, Usher 90+1
at Pancake Lane

Leverstock Green earned a much-needed three points from an excellent performance against one of the teams below them in the table, Oxhey Jets. It was a game played on a difficult muddy surface, but the two teams still produced an entertaining match with plenty of chances created at both ends.

Paul Hunt continues to ring the changes, with two more new signings in the side today. Ashley Addison has been signed from Tring Athletic, and Ollie Buckley made his senior debut for the club having played in the under-18 side five years ago. It was the latter who had the first big impact on the game as Leverstock took an early lead. Ryan Laville threaded a pass through to Buckley, and his shot took a slight deflection off a defender, which was enough to wrongfoot keeper Davis Boateng and send the ball in at his near post in the 4th minute.

Oxhey had the chance to equalise in the 12th minute when Green keeper Liam Jahn was penalised for handling a back pass. The result was an indirect free kick from close range which was kept out by a great goalline clearance from Curtis Donaldson.

A minute later Jon Davies broke forward and played the ball out to Donaldson, who curled over a cross which Addison got his head to but couldn't direct on target. On 19 minutes a Donaldson free kick from near the corner flag was headed over by Laville. A minute later a superb shot from Addison hit the underside of the bar and bounced down on the wrong side of the line from the Leverstock perspective before being claimed by the grateful Boateng.

Leverstock continued to create chances. On 22 minutes a chipped pass from Donaldson found Buckley but his shot was saved. A minute later Addison won the ball from a defender and ran on to beat a couple of players before shooting wide.

Having had so many chances to increase their lead, inevitably Leverstock conceded an equaliser in the 25th minute. An Oxhey corner was headed away, but only as far as Ben Alexander, who connected with a superb first-time volley that flew into the top corner of the net.

However, it took only three minutes for Leverstock to re-establish their lead. A cross from Donaldson was headed away, but Buckley played the ball back into the box, where Laville drilled home an angled shot from the edge of the six-yard box.

Oxhey then had two chances to equalise again. On 29 minutes Alexander was through on goal, but Jahn saved his shot. A minute later Martin Netzer had acres of space on the right, and got the better of Jack Watts as he ran into the box, but shot into the side netting.

Having survived those scares, Leverstock increased their lead to 3-1 on the 35th minute as Donaldson delivered a corner into the heart of the six yard box where Laville got a touch to the ball to stab it home.

Oxhey almost pulled a goal back on the stroke of half time as Netzer again took on Watts in the box, but Jahn tipped his shot onto the post and wide to preserve his side's two-goal lead into the break.

The visitors had the first effort of the second half in the 47th minute as Alexander hit a shot from the edge of the box which didn't go far over the bar. Four minutes later Buckley hit an even better shot, but was unlucky as for the second time in the match the ball struck the underside of the bar and bounced down on the wrong side of the line. Laville's effort from the rebound was saved by Boateng.

The next goal was crucial, and it was Leverstock who scored it in the 57th minute. A great chipped pass from Alex McCarthy found Buckley inside the box, and he took the ball down and shot home his second goal of the match for a 4-1 Leverstock lead.

It was almost 5-1 two minutes later when Addison was clean through, but he shot into the side netting. Leverstock continued to create chances for the rest of the game, and Addison had the ball in the net in the 85th minute as he netted the rebound after Dan Griggs' shot was saved, but it was ruled out for offside.

In the first minute of stoppage time Jahn did well to turn a shot from Warren Gladdy round the post, but from the resulting corner the ball was tipped up into the air, and as it came down Oxhey sub Greg Usher was quickest to react to pull a goal back for the Jets. However, within a minute Leverstock had their three-goal lead back as Griggs was put through to finish coolly for a final score of 5-2.

It was the first win for the club since Paul Hunt took sole charge of the first team, with good performances all over the park, particularly from the impressive Jack Samuel at the back. It will be a much-needed confidence boost for the side as they go into a busy period of games, weather permitting. Next up is a trip to Stotfold on Tuesday night to make a third attempt to complete a fixture that has been abandoned twice this season.
