Green and Hemel in friendly stalemate

Leverstock Green entertained neighbours Hemel Hempstead Town in their second pre-season friendly, and held the Zamaretto League Premier Division side to a 0-0 draw.

The bulk of the Leverstock side was made up of players from last season's squad, but there were also some new faces in action, including Mark Shadbolt and Daniel Picknell, both of whom played at Dunstable Town last season under Darren Feighery, who is now on the Green management team. Another former Dunstable player on display was Nick Jackson, who scored 10 goals in 15 appearances in a short spell at Leverstock in 2005/06. Other returning players were Jon Davies, Craig Preston, Louis Austin and Steve Hutchings, while former pro Marc Bircham came on as a substitute.

There were few scoring chances in the game, with Hemel having most of them in the second half, but the closest they came was a shot which hit the bar. The nearest Leverstock came to scoring was a chip from Picknell just over the bar in the second half. Steve Heath will have been impressed that his side was able to contain a side from two levels higher, and they face another Zamaretto Leagus side at home on Tuesday night when Steve Bateman's Slough Town side visit Pancake Lane.

Starting line-up: Carl Tasker, Lee Bircham, Craig Preston, Bill Morgan, Mark Shadbolt, Nick Jackson, Steve Hutchings, Daniel Picknell, Jon Davies, Louis Austin, Lewis Pritchard.

Also used: Marc Bircham, Bekim Culaj, Adam Hallissey, Dale Sears.

Earlier in the day, Lee Wakefield's under-18 side played their opening friendly, against a very strong Luton Town under-18 side, and were beaten 10-0.
