Green hit four again in friendly win

Leverstock Green continued their promising pre-season build up with a 4-0 win over Bicester Town at Pancake Lane on Saturday.

The Green side should have taken the lead in the 8th minute when a pass from Louis Bircham put Chris Blunden through on goal, but Blunden tried to square the ball and it was cleared by a defender. On 34 minutes Billy Smith made a great run from the halfway line into the box where his shot was saved by the keeper, as was a follow-up effort from Blunden. Four minutes later Smith was just wide with a well-struck long-range effort.

Finally on 40 minutes Leverstock took the lead. A pass from Timi Salako put Smith away down the left, and Smith squared for Blunden to net from close range.

Leverstock continued to impress in the second half. On 51 minutes they doubled their lead as Bircham connected with a cracking first-time shot from just oustide the box that gave the keeper no chance.

Blunden almost added a third on 69 minutes when he was through on goal, but the keeper saved Blunden's shot with his legs. However, two minutes later, newcomer Bertie Spires launched a cross-cum-chip from the left touchline which went straight over the keeper's outstretched arm to increase the lead to 3-0.

The fourth goal was not long in coming, as Bircham's pass put Nathan Jallow through on goal to finish well in the 75th minute.

On 83 minutes an effort from Smith was cleared off the line, and Spires' header from the rebound was tipped over the bar. Leverstock keeper Reece Axten maintained his side's clean sheet with a great save in the last minute, and Spires almost added a 5th in stoppage time as he got on the end of an excellent cross from Blunden with a diving header that went just wide.

Leverstock manager Paul Faulkner was missing several key players today due to holidays, but his squad still produced an excellent performance all across the pitch against a decent side that are back in senior football after a four-year absence and competing in the Hellenic League Division 1. Leverstock have one more friendly to play, at home to Hatfield Town on Tuesday night, before travelling to FC Broxbourne Borough in the first round of the Herts Charity Shield next Saturday.
