Leverstock Green
claimed another three points last night
as they eased to a comfortable 3-0 win
over struggling Ruislip Manor. There was
a depleted look about the Green line-up,
with James Armstrong and Kenny Hull
suspended, while Mark Welling and Dale
Sears were out with injuries. Youth team
keeper Craig Weston came in for his
second game, and reserve team defender
Ollie Brown made his first start for the
senior side.
On a cold and wet night in front of a
smaller than usual crowd, Green made a
good start to the match. In the 3rd
minute Steve Flains free kick was
headed down by Allan Arthur to Matt
Wardle, but he shot over the bar. On 10
minutes Anthony Page had a chance from a
cross to the far post, but headed wide
against his former club. However, a
minute later Frankie Jowles cross
from the right touchline found Arthur
inside the box, and he brought the ball
down before hitting a shot on the turn
that put Green into a 1-0 lead.
Leverstock were unable to build on that
advantage for the rest of the half,
although there was little threat at the
other end. The best moment for the
visitors was on 35 minutes when Adam
Newton and Justin Bailey combined to move
the ball into the penalty area, but
Baileys shot was blocked by Flain.
The second half saw Green continue to be
well on top, and they added their second
goal in the 52nd minute. Page made a
purposeful run from the halfway line
before threading through to Wardle, who
beat the last defender before shooting
home from the edge of the penalty area.
There was a flurry of chances for Green
towards the end of the game. On 76
minutes Jowles corner found the
head of Louis West, but keeper James
Christian made a great save to tip it
over the bar. From the resulting corner
Christian dropped the ball, but Arthur
hit the loose ball over the bar. A minute
later Wardle forced himself between two
defenders to set up another shooting
chance, but Christian saved his effort.
Wardle shot over the bar from ten yards
out on 82 minutes before Green finally
added their third goal four minutes from
time. Jowles corner got a glancing
touch off Arthurs head, and the
ball somehow found its way between the
defenders on the line to round off the
victory. |
