An injury-time
equaliser from Matt Wardle rescued a
point for Leverstock Green from their
trip to Kingsbury London Tigers. Green
certainly deserved a point for their
efforts, and it was the right result
between two teams who put on a more
entertaining match than would be expected
given the strong wind and occasional
snowstorms on a bitterly cold afternoon.
Leverstock were missing a number of first-team
regulars due to injuries and absentees,
giving a chance for a rare first-team
start for Tony Oliver, who went on to
give a man-of-the-match display in
midfield. Other players were forced to
play in unfamiliar positions as Mick
Vipond shuffled his formation. However,
this was a much better performance all-round
than the previous one at St Margaretsbury.
It took some time for both teams to come
to terms with the conditions, but
eventually the chances arrived. On 28
minutes Frankie Jowle delivered a cross
which home keeper Siki Kambila could only
punch away. The ball dropped for Wardle,
but he blasted it over the bar. At the
other end four minutes later, a defensive
slip allowed Adriano Gomes Marques to get
in a shot which Carl Tasker did well to
parry away. Danilson Vicente came in for
the rebound, but Jamie Parsons slid in
with a tackle to deny him. Kenny Hull
provided the saving tackle on 36 minutes
when Marques cross found Sirak
Boyene all alone in front of goal. In the
last minute of the half a good break from
Leverstock saw Jowle feed James Armstrong
down the right. Armstrong played a cross-field
ball into the path of Wardle, whose shot
on the run was well saved by Kambila.
Green had another chance early in the
second half when Jowles free kick
found Wardle at the far post, but he
headed across goal and wide. It was the
home side who broke the deadlock with a
bolt from the blue on 55 minutes. Marques
received the ball almost 30 yards out,
and hit a shot which took a deflection
off a Green defender and flew past Tasker
for the opening goal.
Green kept their heads up and pressed
forward in search of the equaliser. On 66
minutes Jowles ball into the box
put Armstrong through on goal, but he was
denied by a tackle from the impressive
Marcus Lansiquot. Three minutes later
Jowles corner found Allan Arthur,
whose header was blocked on the line, as
was the follow-up from Armstrong.
Jowles free kick seconds later just
eluded the head of Arthur.
The home side had a chance to seal the
game on 75 minutes. Kye Davies looked
suspiciously offside when he was put
clean through, but the flag stayed down.
However, with only Tasker to beat, the
big-haired substitute slotted his shot
wide of the post. Nine minutes from time
Leverstock were denied what they felt was
a clear penalty when Armstrong was rugby-tackled
by Tarik Ellekhlifi, but the referee was
unmoved. Three minutes from time a cross
from Steve Hawes found Wardle at the far
post with a header which Kambila fumbled
and juggled, but somehow prevented from
crossing the line.
It looked as though Kingsbury would reap
the reward for their resolute defending
as the clock ticked over 90 minutes, but
Green had another chance to come.
Substitute Stuart Bailey, another to step
up from the reserves and perform
impressively, won the ball on the left
near the halfway line, and beat a couple
of defenders before threading a pass that
put Wardle through on goal. Wardle
sidestepped Kambila and buried the ball
in the corner of the net to level the
scores and ensure that Leverstock got
their deserved point. |
