After three games
without a win, Leverstock Green returned
to form as a goal in each half earned
them a 2-0 home win over Hanwell Town.
This was an excellent all-round display
against a Hanwell side which had won five
of their previous six games, with the
only blot being the receipt of five
yellow cards from a card-happy referee in
a game which scarcely had a bad foul in
it.
Green certainly made the stronger start
of the two sides, and went close in the 5th
minute when Steve Flains corner hit
the crossbar. Three minutes later there
was a big shout for a penalty when James
Armstrongs cross appeared to be
blocked by the hand of Maradona Mason,
but the referee only awarded a corner.
The visitors might have taken the lead
against the run of play in the 17th
minute when Green were outnumbered at the
back, but Michael Chukuroahs
attemped cross to the unmarked Charley
Baverstock was cut out by Graeme Milner.
On 25 minutes Baverstock hit the crossbar
with a looping header from Ryan
McIntoshs corner.
The deadlock was broken on 28 minutes.
Flains cross into the box was laid
off by Matt Wardle to Armstrong, who
sidestepped a defender and shot home to
put Green 1-0 up. Two minutes later Allan
Arthur chased a pass from Wardle and got
to it before keeper Jakub Machlowski, but
having rounded Machlowski, Arthurs
cross found only a Hanwell defender.
Green continued where they had left off
in the second half. Five minutes in,
Flain made a break from defence and
played the ball through to Armstrong, who
was only stopped by a foul just outside
the box. However, from the resulting free
kick Frankie Jowle produced one of his
specials, curling the ball over the wall
and out of Machlowskis reach to put
Green into a 2-0 lead. There should have
been a penalty two minutes later when
Armstrong was pushed over inside the box,
but the referee awarded a free kick just
outside the box.
There was a key moment on 63 minutes as
Hanwell sub Darren OCallaghan
robbed Jowle and quickly played the ball
forward to put Chukuroah through on goal,
but Louis West got back to put in a
tremendous tackle, preserving the two-goal
lead.
From then on it was just a question of
whether Green could add to their lead.
Armstrong had several chances, the best
of which was five minutes from time when
Arthur rounded Machlowski and squared the
ball, but with an open goal at his mercy,
Armstrong failed to make proper contact
and the ball dribbled wide. In the end
they had to settle for a 2-0 result and a
fully-deserved win. |
