Leverstock Green
won their third successive match, and in
the process moved above Hanwell Town into
8th place in the Premier Division table.
This win over a London Colney side
already doomed to finishing bottom was
more comfortable than the 3-1 scoreline
suggests, as Green missed numerous
chances.
In the early stages it looked as though
Leverstock would run riot, as they had
the freedom of the Colney half with few
challenges coming in from defenders. In
the 3rd minute Frankie Jowles free
kick found the head of Louis West, but
his header went across goal and wide. Two
minutes later Jowle curled over a corner,
and Stuart Bailey came in unchallenged to
thunder home a header that opened the
scoring.
On 8 minutes another Jowle free kick
found James Armstrong, who laid the ball
back to West, but his shot went just over
the bar. On 13 minutes Bailey turned
provider, as his cross from the bye-line
beat the keepers arm and gave Allan
Arthur a simple header into an empty net
for a 2-0 lead.
The one-way traffic continued, as Steve
Hawes hit a snap shot from outside the
box on 22 minutes which keeper Gary
Statham did well to tip over the bar with
one hand. Two minutes later Jowle went on
a run down the left and threaded a pass
to set up Arthur on the edge of the box,
but he shot wide. The visitors won on a
corner on 29 minutes, from which Greg
Shaw shot just wide, but the action soon
switched back to the other end where Matt
Wardle went close twice within a minute,
firstly hitting the post from
Arthurs cross, and then failing to
make contact with Jowles ball
across goal after a mazy run into the box.
The score was still only 2-0 going into
the break, and as the second half opened
in heavy rain, it looked as though Green
might have shot their bolt as they
created little in the early stages.
However, on 66 minutes Dale Sears struck
home a volley from the edge of the
penalty area for the third goal which got
the momentum going again.
Wardle was again unlucky on 69 minutes as
his shot from a corner was deflected wide
by a defender, and his shot from the
resulting corner was turned round the
post by Statham. More goals looked likely,
but in fact the only other one came from
the visitors. Two minutes from time Sam
Mitchell hit a shot along the ground from
outside the box which Graeme Milner
should probably have kept out, but the
ball seemed to go through his hands,
giving Colney a consolation goal and
denying Milner a clean sheet against his
former club. |
