Leverstock Green
continued their late surge up the table
as four second-half goals earned them a
comfortable victory over Cockfosters,
which takes them above Brimsdown Rovers
into 7th place. This was a fourth
successive win for Mick Vipond's team.
Green looked good from the start, playing
some nice football, and were unlucky not
to break the deadlock in the first half.
On 8 minutes Allan Arthur played a neat
crossfield ball to Frankie Jowle, who
then played a ball down the channel to
James Armstrong. Armstrong's shot was
saved by the boot of visiting keeper Chay
Morris, and both Matt Wardle and Arthur
went for the rebound, but between them
they put the ball over the bar. Five
minutes later Dale Sears won a tough
challenge in midfield and played the ball
forward to Jowle, whose cross-cum-shot
went just over the bar. Jowle was
involved again on 19 minutes when he
crossed to the far post for Arthur, but
at fuill stretch Arthur could only head
across goal.
Cockfosters went close to taking the lead
on 30 minutes. A shot from Dan O'Connor
was only parried by Graeme Milner, who
came out to collect the rebound, but
Jamie Brandon got there first and sent a
lob over the stranded keeper. However,
Jamie Parsons saved the day with a header
off the line.
Leverstock continued their good play into
the second half, only this time they were
rewarded by finding the net regularly. On
55 minutes Steve Flain took a throw-in
near the corner flag. The throw found
Arthur, who hooked a cross into the box,
where Anthony Page came in with a header
that sneaked between Morris and the post
for the opening goal.
Milner maintained his side's lead two
minutes later when he tipped a stinging
shot from O'Connor over the bar. The lead
was doubled on 65 minutes when Wardle won
the ball outside the penalty area, and
darted into the box before hitting an
angled low shot over Morris's hands into
the corner of the net.
Another splendid goal followed six
minutes later, As the ball was cleared
from a Cockfosters attack, Jowle made a
lung-busting run down the right touchline
to beat a defender and chip a cross back
from the bye-line, and it found the head
of Armstrong for a simple nod home for a
3-0 lead.
Wardle went close to adding a fourth on
75 minutes, but his shot went just wide.
Dan Stoker replaced Armstrong, and good
work from Stoker won a throw near the
corner flag. Jowle's throw into the box
was flicked on by Page to Dale Sears, who
struck a sweet volley past Morris for
goal number four.
Wardle was inches wide with another shot
in stoppage time, but Green had to settle
for four. With one game left, sixth place
is possible with a win, but would require
defeat for Langford and a goal difference
swing of four. A more realistic target
for the final game at home to Oxhey Jets
is two goals, which would give Leverstock
their highest tally of league goals in a
season since joining the South Midlands
League. The current record is 86 goals in
season 2001/02. |
