Leverstock Green (0) 1 Connolly 90+8
Tring Athletic (1) 1 Iannone 35
at Pancake Lane

Leverstock Green gained a point from Saturday's local derby against Tring Athletic, but they could not have left it much later, with Gary Connolly's equaliser coming in the eighth minute of stoppage time. Green manager Steve Heath admitted he did not know where the referee had got the eight minutes from, but it was generally agreed that Leverstock deserved a point out of the game.

Green were without two of their more recent arrivals in Andrew Cracknell and Kevin Cotton, but on the plus side Louis West made his first start since returning from injury and was solid throughout. The match started in heavy rain, which persisted through the afternoon, and neither side created any chances early on.

In the 18th minute Bill Morgan's free kick to the far post was headed back across goal by Simon Conway, but Dale Sears couldn't get his boot onto the ball. On 21 minutes, after good work from Conway and Lee Bircham, Matt Wardle's cross just eluded Lewis Pritchard, and Sears couldn't divert the ball inside the far post. Five minutes later Bircham's cross was headed back across goal by West to Pritchard, whose shot was cleared off the line by a defender.

Tring hadn't created anything before taking the lead in the 35th minute. It was an unfortunate goal from Leverstock's perspective; as two Green defenders tried to clear a cross, the ball cannoned off them straight into the path of Vinnie Iannone, who calmly steered the ball past Kevin Marsh to open the scoring.

Tring finished the half the stronger side. Henry Thomas headed Iannone's free kick across goal and wide on 41 minutes, and Iannone himself shot wide when put through by Danny Gray two minutes later. In stoppage time Thomas got his head on another free kick, but Marsh saved.

Leverstock made a strong start to the second half. In the opening minute Sears put Pritchard through, but having sidestepped Tring keeper Mike Underwood, Pritchard's shot was cleared off the line by a Tring defender. Pritchard shot wide from a good position four minutes later.

On 52 minutes Marsh kept Green in the game when he tipped over a shot from ex-Green man Mark Burfoot. Two minutes later at the other end Daniel Griggs put the ball across goal, but Pritchard couldn't quite connect as he slid in. Griggs himself had a great chance on 70 minutes when he slid in at the far post to meet a cross from Pritchard, but he sent the ball across goal and wide. Marsh tipped over a header from Chris Salmon on 79 minutes, and from the resulting corner Dave Salmon's goal-bound shot was deflected over the bar off a Green defender.

Steve Heath had already brought on Gary Connolly, and with six minutes remaining he played his last cards, bringing on Jack Johnson and Lee Johnson, the latter to play up front rather than his usual centre-half role. Burfoot should have won the game for Tring in the 89th minute as he met Darren Franklin's cross, but contrived to miss from a yard out.

Green pushed hard during stoppage time, but looked equally likely to get caught on the break than score themselves. Tring forward Ashley Addison hit a wild shot from distance over the bar when his teammates would surely have preferred him to take the ball into the corner and kill more time. Somehow the clock kept on ticking, and entering the eighth minute of stoppage time, Green won a throw by the corner flag. Rather than launch a long throw into the box, Bircham took a short throw back to Connolly. From near the touchline, Connolly launched what was undoubtedly intended as a cross, but it cleared everyone and landed straight in the corner of the net for a sensational last-gasp equaliser. The referee blew the final whistle a few seconds after the restart, and Green had snatched a deserved point, which made the difference between 9th and 12th place in the table.
