Another week and another freak injury time equaliser for Leverstock Green. Matt Wardle knew very little about the goal that cannoned in off his chin to level the scores, but as with last week's game, Green deserved at least a point on the balance of play and chances.
Hertford's bumpy pitch has rarely been conducive to good games in recent years, and this one was no exception as both teams struggled to play football in the conditions. Leverstock squandered a couple of early possibilities due to poor crosses, and it was 20 minutes into the game before the first near-miss. Lee Bircham's corner was cleared to the edge of the penalty area, but Daniel Griggs followed up with a shot along the ground which had the keeper beaten, but came back off the post. The rebound found its way to Lee Johnson, who crossed for Simon Conway, but he shot wide.
Three minutes later Dale Sears met a Bircham free kick with a firm header, but Hertford keeper Louis O'Neill saved. Hertford's first chance came on 31 minutes when Attila Korsoveczki was put clean through, but Green keeper Carl Tasker, starting his first first-team game of this spell at the club, came off his line to save.
On 33 minutes Matt Wardle received a pass from Bill Morgan and ran on to shoot, but O'Neill saved. At the other end a minute later Dominic Musafini hit the post for Hertford. In the last minute of the half Conway's cross was headed back across goal by Griggs. Wardle had a swing at the ball and missed before Sears was clearly brought down while lining up a shot, but the referee ignored the Green shouts for a penalty.
The second half saw fewer chances. In the opening minute Korsoveczki had a good chance from Pablo Ardiles' cross, but headed wide, while two minutes later Leverstock's Richard Harvey had a shot deflected wide off a defender. Hertford's goal came on 54 minutes. After a patient build-up, Kevin Cooper played the ball out to Lee Roberts, whose dangerous cross was bundled home by Musafini.
Steve Heath made two changes just after the hour mark, bringing on Jack Johnson and last week's hero Gary Connolly. However, chances were still hard to come by. Ten minutes from time Griggs shot high and wide from a good position, and in the 86th minute Connolly's free kick was tipped over the bar by O'Neill.
As the game went into stoppage time, an equaliser looked just as unlikely as it did last week. However, in the second minute Green got the ball into the Hertford box. After a brief scramble, a defender played the ball back to O'Neill, who couldn't pick the ball up. O'Neill tried to kick it clear but hit it straight into Wardle's face, from where it rebounded back towards the goal and went in off the post for another bizarre equaliser.
Wardle required a couple of minutes treatment after his unwitting intervention, but he was OK to walk off the pitch and the game ended as a 1-1 draw.
