Leverstock Green turned in another excellent performance as they won 3-1 at Biggleswade United in tonight's SSML Premier Division match. The stats are beginning to pile up for Steve Heath's side: three straight wins, four straight away wins and ten league games unbeaten. They are now up to 5th in the league table, just eight points behind leaders Aylesbury.
Green welcomed back the four players missing from Saturday's game to the squad, however this time they were without both scorers from Saturday plus Dale Sears. They made a strong start to the game, although it was the home side who had the game's first clear-cut chance. On 14 minutes Sean Murray beat the offside flag to have a clear run on goal from the halfway line, however when faced with Green keeper Carl Tasker, Murray shot wide of the post.
Three minutes later it was Leverstock who took the lead. Bekim Culaj played a great ball from the halfway line which found Matt Wardle just outside the box. Wardle tried to work a shooting chance, but his shot was blocked. However, the ball ran through to Lewis Pritchard, who slotted the ball past keeper Adam Lawrence for the opening goal.
There could have been a second goal on 28 minutes. Gary Connolly struck a superb shot from 35 yards which came back off the bar and landed at the feet of Pritchard, however it came to him too quickly and his effort went across the face of goal and wide. A minute later, though, Daniel Griggs chipped the ball into the box. Biggleswade defender Andre Maltay sliced his clearance into the air, and as the ball came down Pritchard stuck out a boot and diverted it past Lawrence to put Green into a 2-0 lead which they held until half-time.
Pritchard was having trouble with his recently-injured shoulder and had to come off at half time, to be replaced by Jamie Sharples. Biggleswade certainly weren't giving up, and got themselves back into the game on 66 minutes. Kerran Birch showed some trickery as he took the ball to the bye-line and chipped a cross to the far post, where Sean Murray headed home to pull the score back to 2-1. For a while it looked likely that they would go on to level the scores, but Green held on through a tough spell, with Tasker saving at the near post from Birch on 73 minutes.
Green had fewer chances than in the first half, but five minutes from time a free kick chipped into the box was headed away, but only as far as Connolly, who latched onto the ball and made a determined run before hitting a shot which beat Lawrence and went in off the post to restore the two-goal cushion at 3-1.
That proved to be enough for a well-deserved win, and Green now face a tough local derby at Tring Athletic in their next game on Saturday.
