Match Report
Saturday 13th March 2010 Molten Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division
Leverstock Green (0) 0
Broxbourne Borough (1) 1 Brennan 35
at Pancake Lane

For the second time in four days, Leverstock Green failed to find the net and were beaten by a single goal. A solitary first-half strike was enough for Broxbourne Borough to take all three points from Pancake Lane.

Steve Heath had a rather depleted squad to select from today. Bill Morgan was starting a two-game suspension for amassing ten bookings, while Carl Tasker and Lewis Pritchard were both unavailable, added to the continuing absences through injury of Louis West and Gary Connolly. Reserve team keeper Matt Hooker stepped in between the sticks, while youth team player Jordan Fredericks, recently returned to the club after being released by Barnet, was on the bench.

Like Tuesday's game with Dunstable, this was a tight game between two evenly-matched teams, with not many clear-cut chances. Broxbourne had the game's first effort in the second minute as a ball down the middle put Ben Andreous in behind the Green defence, but he shot wide of the near post. Richard Harvey was off-target with Green's first shot a few minutes later. Broxbourne had the better of the first half against a sluggish-looking Green side, and they took the lead after 35 minutes when Mark Brennan fought through several challenges before finding himself through against Hooker, and Brennan lifted the ball over the oncoming keeper into the corner of the net to open the scoring.

Leverstock were forced into a change at half time with Sean Biswell replacing Mark Welling, and it was a much better performance from the Green side in the second half. On 55 minutes Daniel Griggs played in Simon Conway, who put the ball across the face of goal, just out of reach of Matt Wardle and Adam Reid, who were both coming in to finish. Three minutes later Wardle threaded a pass to put Reid through on goal, but Broxbourne keeper Obey Murefu came off his line and parried Reid's shot away.

Fredericks replaced Reid on 70 minutes, but Green were still unable to make the most of their possession. Hooker came to the rescue on 78 minutes as Lee Bircham brought down Broxbourne's Rory Brien just outside the box, diving to his left to turn away Daryl Mitchell's curling free kick over the wall.

Leverstock kept on battling to the end, and went close twice in stoppage time. A cross by Bircham was headed away, but only to the edge of the box where Biswell met it with a dipping shot which went just over the bar. Another cross from Bircham found the head of Wardle, but it was saved by Murefu.

Next up for Green is a visit to Welwyn Garden City's Herns Lane ground to face Hatfield Town in a league game on Wednesday night.
