Leverstock Green's mini-unbeaten run of three games came to a tame end in a disappointing game at Haringey Borough. It didn't promise to be a classic, being played on a poor pitch between two teams that had both played on Thursday night, and it certainly didn't turn out to be a classic. Leverstock had most of the possession but ultimately made little of it.
Right from the start both teams were struggling to play football with the ball bobbling about all over the place due to the pitch. Leverstock won a lot of corners during the match, and both Lee Johnson and Richard Harvey headed over the bar from corners in the 18th and 19th minutes.
The only goal came from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute. Bill Morgan tried to shepherd the ball back to Carl Tasker, but didn't get enough on it, allowing Tolu Popoola to nip in and intercept. Popoola tried to go round Tasker, but a small clip off the Green keeper's boot sent him over and the referee awarded the spot kick. Tasker might have feared a red card as he was the last man, but the fact that Popoola was heading away from goal at the time of the contact meant he only got a yellow. Lloyd Opara sent Tasker the wrong way from the spot to put Haringey 1-0 up.
Leverstock had another chance from a corner on 26 minutes, but Morgan's shot was blocked in front of goal, and on 36 minutes Simon Conway headed over from a free kick. In between those chances Tasker had to go down low to his left to save a shot from Opara. Dale Sears had been struggling with a hamstring injury since the start, and two minutes before the break had to bow to the inevitable and give way to Jordan Fredericks.
The second half was almost all Leverstock, but they could not make the most of it. On 50 minutes Morgan hit a free kick just over the bar. The best move of the match on 58 minutes ended with Daniel Griggs laying off to set up Matt Wardle, but Wardle curled his shot over the angle of post and bar. A minute later Fredericks was denied when he tried a shot from a narrow angle, as the Haringey keeper tipped it over the bar.
During the course of the second half Haringey lost three players, including both strikers, due to injuries that probably owed plenty to the pitch. Five minutes from time they were reduced to ten men when Gabriel Nana-Owusu swung an arm at Griggs in retaliation for a foul, and was shown a red card. It didn't affect the outcome of the game, though, as Leverstock were unable to create any more chances.
