Leverstock Green's golden run of form continued as they thrashed Welwyn Garden City 6-0 at Pancake Lane on Saturday to progress in the FA Carlsberg Vase. It was a fourth straight win and a seventh straight game unbeaten in all competitions for Steve Heath's side. Star of the show today was Charlie Gorman, who netted a second half hat-trick.
This was a game of many chances, and there were plenty for both sides in the first half. The visitors, playing now in SSML Division One after relegation last season, had the first chance in the 4th minute. Robbie Carroll flicked on a free kick to put Dominic Hinds through on goal, but his shot from a narrow angle hit the bar on its way over the top. Three minutes later Welwyn keeper Mark Jessop had to palm away a far-post header from Steve Hatch. There was another chance for Hinds on 9 minutes when a long throw was flicked on, but he shot over again. On 13 minutes a cleverly-worked free kick from Charlie Gorman put Louis Austin in on goal, but Jessop turned away his shot across goal.
There was an even better chance for Green on 16 minutes when Steve Hutchins won the ball in midfield and threaded a pass to put Lewis Pritchard clean through, but Jessop saved Pritchard's eventual shot, and neither Pritchard nor Austin could force home the loose ball. However, on 27 minutes Gorman won the ball and played a great crossfield pass to Lee Stobbs, who ran at the Welwyn defence and beat one before drilling a low shot from outside the box into the corner of the net to put Green into a 1-0 lead.
Carl Tasker made a save two minutes later to keep Leverstock ahead, but for the remainder of the half it was Green who missed a succession of chances to extend their lead. On 30 minutes Adam Hallissey shot over from Stobbs' cross, two minutes later Jessop saved a point-blank shot from Pritchard and Gorman put the rebound over the bar, and on 39 minutes Austin dived in at the far post to connect with a Stobbs cross but didn't get his header on target.
The second half started in much the same vein. On 48 minutes Stobbs brought the ball out of the box and played it down the line to Austin, who outpaced the defence but shot over the bar. However, a foul on Jon Davies just outside the box on 52 minutes gave Leverstock a great chance. Davies and Gorman both stood over the free kick, but it was Gorman who took it, curling the ball over the wall and out of Jessop's reach into the top corner for a superb second Green goal.
It was looking like one-way traffic now, and four minutes later Pritchard threaded a pass to put Gorman through, and the 18-year old calmly slotted the ball under Jessop for his second and Green's third goal which signalled the opening of the floodgates.
Steve Heath made all three of his substitutions in quick succession, one of which gave a first team debut to 17-year old Scott Gungadoo. The fourth goal came on 65 minutes. Stobbs made a run down the right and put a ball into the box which any one of three unmarked Green players could have finished, but it was Pritchard who was first in the queue to control it and shoot past Jessop from close range.
Gorman came close to his hat-trick on 73 minutes when Austin made a run down the left and crossed to the far post, but his header was saved by Jessop. However, on 82 minutes Austin came in from the right and got to the bye-line before pulling the ball back across goal. Jessop palmed the ball away, but only as far as Gorman, who netted the loose ball to complete the hat-trick for 5-0.
Austin waltzed through the Welwyn defence to slot home the sixth on 85 minutes, and there could have been even more, as Gorman, Stobbs and Davies all had efforts at goal over the closing minutes, but 6-0 was how it finished. Leverstock now progress to the first round proper, where they are at home to Enfield 1893 in two weeks time.
