Whilst Leverstock Green are enjoying great results in midweek cup ties at the moment, their league form seems to be tailing off. They suffered a second successive league defeat on Saturday away to struggling Kentish Town and again failed to find the net. This was an even worse performance than last Saturday's against Stotfold, with the team showing little cohesion or purpose. Even so, Green could have salvaged a point from the game but squandered a golden opportunity in the last minute.
With the pitch at Kentish Town's usual home ground of Copthall Stadium waterlogged, the game was switched to Haringey Borough's Coles Park ground. The pitch here wasn't the greatest either, but even that couldn't excuse the quality of the game. The only save that either keeper had to make in the first half came in the 12th minute when Kentish Town broke away. Felix Murray fed Daniel Jones on the overlap, but Carl Tasker came off his line to save Jones' eventual shot. There was a chance for Green midway through the half when Louis Austin took advantage of a mix-up between keeper James Noonan and a defender to take the ball round Noonan, but Austin was thwarted by a defender before he could get a shot at the empty net. Other than that, Leverstock's only sniffs at goal came from set-pieces, but they failed to get an effort on target.
The second half opened more promisingly for Green, and they had a near miss on 53 minutes when Lewis Pritchard hit a shot from outside the box which Noonan saved, but couldn't hold onto. Austin followed up and got a boot on the loose ball, but not enough to carry it over the line before a defender cleared. Three minutes later Green were caught on the break as Jones made a run at goal from the halfway line. Jones was forced wide but still managed to get in a shot from a narrow angle which beat Tasker and put the home side into a 1-0 lead.
After that the game regressed into the scrappy affair that the first half had been, and three substitutions didn't make the Green attack look any more threatening.Ten minutes from time Leverstock won a free kick in a dangerous position just outside the box, but Ben Butler's shot which went straight into the wall summed up the afternoon. Green started to put some pressure on over the closing minutes, and in the last minute a long throw from Austin caused a goalmouth scramble in which Bill Morgan was upended by a defender. The referee pointed to the penalty spot, and skipper Lee Bircham stepped up to take the spot kick, fresh from his successful effort at Tring on Tuesday. However, this one was not one of his best, and Noonan dived to his left to save it, ensuring that his side took the three points, which on the balance of play they deserved.
